A RARE CELADON AND BLACK JADE CICADA PENDANT IN C-SHAPED CURVILINEAR FORM 石家河文化 青玉蝉形珮 China, Shijiahe culture (BC2500-BC2000) H.6.8cm The jade cicada of the Shijiahe Culture (c. 4600–4000 years ago, middle reaches of the Yangtze River in the Jianghan Plain) represents the pinnacle of prehistoric jade cicada production and is the most frequently unearthed animal-form jade from this culture. This piece is made of celadon to dark jade material. It features a rounded, convex head, a protruding mouth, and bulging eyes. The body is a curled, flattened form. The neck is divided by deep incised lines and two raised ridges. The wings are folded and slightly uplifted, rendered with relief and incised lines to indicate feather structure. The spine and tail are defined by flowing curved lines. The entire surface is finely polished and lustrous. A pair of perforations are located at the mouth and abdomen for suspension. The form is highly naturalistic and represents an early foundation for later jade cicada designs in the Shang and Zhou dynasties (c. 1600–256 BCE). Functionally, it served both as an ornament and a ritual object, reflecting early beliefs in rebirth and immortality. Note The jade cicada is one of the most enduring forms in Chinese jade culture, traceable back to the Xinglongwa Culture (c. 6200–5400 BCE), with further examples in the Hongshan (c. 4700–2900 BCE) and Liangzhu cultures (c. 3300–2300 BCE). Early forms are simple and abstract, mainly used as ornaments or ritual objects, symbolizing the cycle of life inspired by cicada molting. During the Shang and Zhou dynasties (c. 1600–256 BCE), cicada forms became more structured and refined, often used as personal ornaments and occasionally placed in the mouth of the deceased in burial rites. In the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), they reached their peak, commonly used as hanchan (burial cicadas), carved in a bold and simplified “Han Ba Dao” style, symbolizing immortality and rebirth. After the Wei and Jin dynasties (220–420 CE), the style softened and declined, while Song (960–1279 CE) imitations focused on archaic revival, and Ming–Qing (1368–1912 CE) pieces emphasized realism and fine carving.
