拍品描述 翻译
A FINE MUGHAL PALE GREEN JADE ARCHER'S RING, 18TH CENTURYIndia. Of characteristic form, skillfully carved with a full-face lotus blossom flanked by leafy stems, the reverse similarly decorated with a lotus bud. The smoothly polished, translucent stone of an appealing pale celadon tone, with cloudy inclusions and occasional dark specks.Provenance: European private collection. Koller Zürich, 18 June 2024, lot 458, mid-estimate CHF 2,500 or approx. EUR 2,800 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Before Koller, the lot was sold on the English auction market where the following provenance information was relayed to the current owner: A distinguished British Scholar and Collector, inventory number 105, acquired from an English Collector, Easter 1979.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear.Weight: 13.5 gDimensions: Length 4.3 cmBows and arrows were employed for hunting swift-footed game at both close and long range. In Indian archery, the thumb is used to draw the bowstring, with the thumb hooking around it in a distinctive technique. Archer's rings were worn to protect the inner surface of the thumb during shooting. Beyond their practical function, such rings also served as ornamental accessories and could signify rank and social status.Nephrite jade was introduced to the Mughal Empire from Central Asia in the late sixteenth century. However, the earliest objects produced in the imperial workshops date to the reign of Jahangir (r. 1605-1627). Initially, jade artefacts appear to have been reserved for members of the imperial family and the highest-ranking nobles of the court.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related green jade archer's ring, India, dated 17th-18th century, 4.4 cm long, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 36.25.2802. Compare a closely related Mughal white jade archer's ring, dated c. 1650, 4.1 cm long, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number 1022-1871.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's London, 6 October 2015, lot 140Price: GBP 7,500 or approx. EUR 12,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A carved jade archer's thumb ring, India, 17th centuryExpert remark: Compare the closely related form, manner of carving, and floral motif.
