Published & Exhibited: Inspiration & Refinement, Weisbrod Chinese Art, New York, Spring 2006, p. 68-69, no. 20 (dated Jin dynasty).China, 1912-1949 or earlier. The attenuated, finger-ribbed body tapers from the high rounded shoulder to the slightly flared flat foot enclosing a high recessed base. The ribs formed by grooves leaving raised, hard-edged bands between. Black glaze covers the entire vase, falling down the sides, draining irregularly short of the foot, thinning on the raised edges of the grooves to a reddish-brown, pale where thinnest and at the edge of the mouth rim. The foot rim and base are unglazed.Provenance: Victor C. Novotny Collection, New York, United States. A private collection in Valos, Greece, acquired from the above. Weisbrod Chinese Art, New York, United States, acquired circa in the 1990s and held until 2007. Thereafter in an art storage facility in New Jersey, and deaccessioned in 2025. Victor C. Novotny was an important New York collector of Chinese porcelain and ceramics, active in the second half of the 20th century. His collection was widely respected for its quality, with selected works gifted to the Yale University Art Gallery. Further pieces from his collection are now in the Meiyintang collection while others have been sold by major auction houses including Sotheby's. Michael B. Weisbrod is a noted scholar of Chinese art, who has published extensively on the subject over a time span of more than fifty years. In 1972, Michael joined his father Dr. Gerald Weisbrod's Asian art gallery in Toronto, Canada. The father-and-son team opened their New York location on Madison Avenue in 1977, and during the next forty-five years the gallery held a significant number of exhibitions, selling to museums and private collectors across the globe, eventually adding further locations in Shanghai and Hong Kong.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including a firing crack to the mouth, few burst bubbles, minute chips and fills to the foot.Weight: 1,615 g Dimensions: Height 29 cmThe meiping, literally 'plum vase,' is one of the most iconic forms in Chinese ceramics. Its characteristic profile first emerged during the Tang dynasty. The shape was then slowly refined in the Song and Jin dynasty, when potters emphasized harmonious proportions and an elegant, balanced silhouette. Originally intended to hold a single branch of plum blossom, the form combined practical function with aesthetic restraint. By the Yuan dynasty it had become firmly established as a classic vessel type.Museum comparison:Compare a related earlier ribbed meiping, 30.3 cm high, in the Cernuschi Museum, Paris, inventory number MC 6732.
