拍品描述 翻译
A RARE TERRACOTTA HEAD OF BUDDHA, GUPTA PERIOD, CIRCA 3RD-5TH CENTURYExpert's note: This finely modeled reddish-brown terracotta head of the Buddha exemplifies the sophisticated circulation of Buddhist terracotta across northern India, Gandhara, and Sri Lanka during the Gupta period (3rd-5th centuries AD). The work reflects the Gupta aesthetic of idealized symmetry and meditative calm characteristic of northern Indian terracotta workshops, while also revealing the subtle influence of Gandharan realism in its precise facial modeling and expressive detailing. These cross-regional influences reveal a dynamic artistic exchange: Gandharan realism informed Gupta idealism, while Indian formalism resonated in Sri Lanka's Buddhist iconography. Terracotta, valued for its lightness, durability, and adaptability, facilitated the wide dissemination of devotional imagery along trade and pilgrimage networks, allowing motifs of serenity and spiritualized form to resonate across South Asia. The head's refined modeling, harmonious proportions, and contemplative expression underscore its role not merely as a votive object, but as a testament to the interregional exchange of Buddhist artistic idioms during one of the subcontinent's most culturally vibrant periods.India. Finely carved, the serene face with heavy-lidded almond-shaped eyes below elegantly arched brows, centered by a raised circular urna. The pronounced aquiline nose above full bow-shaped lips, flanked by elongated ears, and the hair arranged in ring-punched snail-shell curls over the domed ushnisha.Provenance: An old private collection in Vienna, Austria, thence by descent. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, obvious losses, firing irregularities, chips, nicks, encrustations. (2)Terracotta was the traditional material for religious images in the Ganges Valley and in the Mauryan and Shunga periods from the third to the first century BC. Bengal had been the source of some of the most sophisticated figures of gods and goddesses. In the Gupta period, several centers of terracotta sculpture emerged across the Empire, from Akhnur in Kashmir, down to Shravasti and Bitargaon in Uttar Pradesh, around the Gupta capital at Pataliputra, and down into the Ganges Delta where some of the richest red clays were available. The lack of stone in eastern Bihar and Bengal meant that clay had always been used for architectural purposes, brick adorned with terracotta or stucco being the most widely used material, and a number of archaeological sites in Bengal attest to the sophistication of the effects achieved.Literature comparison: Compare a related terracotta head of Buddha, dated circa 4th-5th century, excavated in Akhnoor and now in the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh.
