拍品描述 翻译
Indonesia, East Java. Seated in dhyanasana on a beaded double lotus throne atop a tiered base, the right hand raised and held in shuni mudra, the left lowered and clasped around the hem of the uttarasanga, which covers the left shoulder and crosses the chest diagonally, but leaves the right shoulder and right arm bare. The face with a benign expression, heavy-lidded downcast eyes under arched brows centered by an urna, a slender nose, and thick lips forming a gentle smile, flanked by ears with pendulous lobes. The hair arranged in large snail-shell curls over the domed ushnisha, backed by a pierced beaded mandorla with a flame border.Provenance: Collection of Henri van der Elst, Antwerp, Belgium. La Balaustra Antichità, Arte Archeologia classica orientale e precolombiana, 1998, Bologna, Italy. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, acquired from the above. A copy of a stamped certificate written by Giuliana Zanetti of Antichità La Balaustra, addressed to Paolo Bertuzzi, dated 2 July 1998, confirming the dating and provenance above, accompanies this lot. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother's business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than sixty years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Scattered nicks, small dents, a tiny stress crack to the aureole, and losses to the flames. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown patina as well as little malachite encrustations.Weight: 1,718 gDimensions: Height 21.2 cmThe present figure draws clear inspiration from the Buddhist imagery disseminated through the Srivijaya sphere during the 9th century, itself deeply indebted to the refined sculptural idioms of eastern India under the Pala dynasty in the first half of the 9th century. The elaborate flaming aureole and lotus throne particularly recall eastern Indian prototypes, while the softened physiognomy and compact meditative posture anticipate the bronze traditions that flourished across maritime Southeast Asia. Such stylistic synthesis is characteristic of the wider cultural and religious exchanges that linked Sumatra and Java during the rise of the Majapahit Empire, when earlier Srivijayan Buddhist visual forms continued to resonate within Javanese courtly and devotional art. Compare a related bronze figure of Buddha in dharmachakra mudra, Pala period, c. 10th century, 23.6 cm high, in the Indian Museum, Kolkata.Literature comparison:Compare a related Javanese bronze Buddha with similar flames around the halo, dated to the 9th century, 19.7 cm high, in the British Museum, registration number 1859,1228.41.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's Paris, 10 December 2014, lot 350 Price: EUR 20,000 or approx.
