A LARGE POLYCHROME WOOD BIOMA FIGURE, FIRST HALF OF 20TH CENTURYExternal Expert Authentication: This lot was authenticated by Prof. Erwin Melchardt, who confirms the attribution and dating above. A copy of Prof. Melchardt's expertise written for Dorotheum, Vienna, 9 June 2016, lot 93, accompanies this lot. Erwin Melchardt is an Austrian journalist, art critic, and internationally recognized expert in non-European art, particularly African and Oceanic art. A passionate collector with a collection of around 4,000 objects, he became one of Austria's leading specialists in the field. His work includes sourcing, authenticating, valuing, and cataloguing objects for international auctions, as well as lecturing on non-European art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He also compiled the catalog of the Leopold Museum's collection of African and Oceanic works, contributing to research and exhibitions exploring the relationship between European modernism and non-European artistic traditions.Papua New Guinea. Boldly carved, the flattened human figure standing on elongated legs atop a small pedestal, with a markedly narrow waist upon which both hands rest. The slender torso decorated with a distinctively serrated motif, centered by a circular design on the abdomen, with both arms slightly arched and held close to the body, decorated with red pigments and traces of white kaolin. The highly stylized rounded face presenting an amiable expression, defined by a pair of rounded eyes, a broad nose with emphatically carved nostrils, and a gently smiling mouth.Provenance: The collection of Inge Bienenstein, Vienna, Austria, thence by descent within the family. Dorotheum, Vienna, 9 June 2016, lot 93, starting price EUR 1,400 or approx. EUR 2,000 (adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Ingeborg Bienenstein (d. 2013) was the founder and director of Bienenstein Gallery, which she started in 1978 in Vienna, Austria. The gallery held several exhibitions each year, displaying fine antiques and works of art from Asia, Africa, and Oceania in context with modern art and design from Europe. This approach aimed at showcasing a universal language of art and the fact that art from all around the world can be connected in a meaningful way.Condition: Very good condition with expected wear, natural imperfections, traces of weathering, rubbing to pigments, few old chips, shallow surface scratches. Good patina overall.Weight: 1,450 gDimensions: Height 112.5 cm The present figure belongs to the sculptural tradition of New Guinea that flourished in the Wapo Creek and Era River areas on the Gulf of Papua. This highly distinctive artistic tradition is characterized by the richness and diversity of anthropomorphic representations, which explore the human body with remarkable inventiveness and formal freedom.Religious and artistic life in this region was traditionally centered on powerful spirit beings known as imunu. Each imunu was typically associated with a specific place in the landscape, such as rivers, forests, or the sea, and it was also linked to the clan located within the territory where it was believed to reside. Wood sculpture in the Papuan Gulf was mainly produced in two-dimensional form, including board-like spirit carvings known as bioma, as well as figures executed in low relief.Works such as the present example were understood as representations and temporary dwelling places for an individual imunu. Villages formerly contained large communal houses, divided into compartments assigned to different clans or subclans. Each compartment contained a clan shrine that housed spirit boards, figural sculptures, human and animal skulls, and other sacred objects related to the imunu of the clan. In this setting, these sculptures functioned as temporary receptacles for ancestral and spirit forces, making their presence perceptible within the human community. They were often accompanied by offerings, such as pig or crocodile skulls, which were deposited as part of ritual practice and veneration.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related bioma figure, 20th century, 63.2 cm high, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 98.37.2.
