拍品描述 翻译
A RARE POLYCHROME WOOD 'WAYANG' BLAWONG (KRIS DISPLAY BOARD) DEPICTING ARJUNA, JAVAIndonesia, early 20th century. Rectangular in form, boldly carved in shallow relief to depict a caricatured representation of Arjuna, standing amid swirling clouds beside a flowering plant. His legs are entwined with the coiling body of an abstracted serpent, while his head is surmounted by a large flaming headdress. The composition framed above by symmetrical volutes surrounded by further scrolling foliage. The reverse additionally decorated with a painted scene of the simian hero Hanuman, rendered with similarly grotesque features, standing astride a lion as he assists the god Rama in rescuing his abducted wife, Sita.Weight: 3,541 gDimensions: Size 93.2 x 37.5 cmProvenance: From the private collection of Jac Hoogerbrugge, Netherlands, acquired in the 1950s, thence by descent. A copy of Jac Hoogerbrugge's personal notes on the present lot including line-drawn sketches accompanies this lot. Jac Hoogerbrugge (1923-2014) was an astute collector and connoisseur of tribal art. Serving as a transport agent and, subsequently, as a United Nations official in Indonesia and New Guinea allowed him to probe deeply into the ritual art of the Batak (North Sumatra), Lake Sentani, the Humboldt Bay, the Asmat (New Guinea), and the Dayak (Borneo). Later in life, having returned to the Netherlands, he continued to hunt out items of ethnographic interest in flea markets, at auctions, but also by means of his excellent connections in missionary circles and with former colonials. At the same time, he explored colonial and missionary archives in order to contextualize and document the objects he found.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, few age cracks, flaking and minor losses to pigments, light warping, traces of weathering, small chips to edges.Kris boards, designated on the island of Java as 'blawong', are carved from a single plank of indigenous teak wood and have traditionally functioned as supports for the display of a hereditary 'kris', an asymmetrical sword often distinguished by its undulating blade. The transmission of the kris across successive generations has, since ancient times, constituted a central element of Javanese familial continuity, while the weapon itself has been widely attributed with potent spiritual and protective qualities. The symbolic and apotropaic qualities inherent to the kris have been frequently echoed in the carved ornamentation of the board upon which it is mounted. Such motifs were not merely decorative in intent, but were understood to complement, and in certain instances to augment, the perceived mystical efficacy of the kris. The grotesque physiognomies of the figures depicted on the present blawong closely correspond to the visual conventions of the puppets used in the Javanese theatrical tradition known as 'wayang kulit'. This traditional art form, perhaps the most widely recognized Javanese artistic expression in the West, is based on the projection of shadows cast by intricately articulated leather puppets, manipulated with rods behind a translucent screen and illuminated by the flickering light of an oil lamp.Arjuna is one of the central figures of the ancient Hindu epic Mahabharata. He is the third eldest of the five Pandava brothers and is traditionally regarded as the most eminent among them. According to the narrative tradition, he is born to Kunti, consort of King Pandu of the Kuru dynasty, and is begotten by Indra, sovereign of the gods, thereby presenting Arjuna as a hero of divine parentage. Within the epic, Arjuna maintains a profound and enduring relationship with his maternal cousin Krishna, who functions as his charioteer, confidant, and spiritual preceptor. In the Indonesian archipelago, the figure of Arjuna has been known and celebrated for centuries. His popularity is particularly notable in Java, Bali, Madura, and Lombok. In Java, Arjuna became a prominent character in several kakawin, long narrative poems composed in Old Javanese, also known as Kawi. These works, written in metrical verse derived from Sanskrit literary traditions, were composed and performed at the courts of central and eastern Javanese kingdoms between the ninth and sixteenth centuries.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related polychrome wood kris display board, Indonesia, Java, 19th century, 56 cm high, in the East Indies Museum, online collection, accession number 29-1186-518.
