拍品描述 翻译
A RARE SANDSTONE FIGURE OF HARIHARA, PRE-ANGKOR, PRASAT ANDET STYLE, 7TH-8TH CENTURYSuperbly carved, the four-armed deity standing in samabhanga, the bare torso sculpted with a muscular upper body, and wearing a simple pleated sampot, elegantly secured at the waist and culminating a central pleated hem which drapes over the left thigh in elegant sweeps, and further secured by a neatly incised foliate chain falling low on the hips.Provenance: Shang Antique, Singapore. A private collection in Barcelona, Spain, acquired from the above. Shang Antique is a well-known gallery in Singapore, housed in one of the charming ancient British army barracks of Dempsey Hill, specializing in genuine South East Asian antiques, and boasting a high-quality reputation since 1984.Condition: Good condition with expected old wear, obvious losses, scattered chips, nicks, and scratches, signs of weathering and erosion, and encrustations. A copy accompanies this lot.Weight: 45.5 kg (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 78.5 cm (excl. stand), 91 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on an associated stand. (2)The Khmer Empire controlled Cambodia as well as large areas of Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos from the sixth to the fifteenth centuries. Khmer sculpture of the pre-Angkor period is unsurpassed in its grace and spirituality, its remarkable naturalism of anatomy and stance, and its restraint in decoration. The present image with its delicately modeled musculature, supple articulation of limbs, and slender torso draped in a deceptively simple sampot, is characteristic of the finest pre-Angkor style.Expert's note: While the present lot lacks its identifying head, the surviving iconographic and stylistic features strongly suggest that it represents Harihara. This conclusion is based on the distinctive combination of regalia and physique, which closely corresponds to surviving depictions of the deity. The cult of Harihara was of great importance in early Cambodia, combining the potency of two of the most powerful Hindu gods, Shiva and Vishnu. Shiva (Hara), embodiment of the forces of destruction and fertility, while Vishnu (Hari), preserver of the world who will give rise to Brahma, the creator, after a cosmic sleep following the end of the current cycle of existence. Harihara embodies the equilibrium between these two irreconcilable forces that is necessary for cosmic balance. Literature comparison:Compare a closely related stone figure of Harihara wearing a similar sampot, dated pre-Angkor period, c. 675-700 AD, 115.6 cm high, in the Kimbell Art Museum, accession number AP 1988.01.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's Paris, 9 June 2015, lot 377Price: EUR 18,750 or approx.
