Scientific Analysis Report: An XRF laboratory test report issued by Hebolabo, Pelt, Belgium, on 17 June 2025, based on verification analysis by EDXRF (energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry), concludes that the statue “is made of high alloy brass, originated in medieval Southern Asia, aprox. 10th century”. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.Khmer Empire. Standing in samapada, the principal arms bent at the waist and lowered in varada mudra, and the other six arms radiating with each hand held in shuni mudra. The deity is dressed in a short sampot secured by a flat belt, the garment with a double-fishtail fold and one edge pulled between the thighs to a fantail on the reverse. The bearded face with almond-shaped eyes, aquiline nose, and pouting lips, flanked by elongated earlobes, and the hair in neat rows tied into an elegant chignon of overlapping loops, centered by a diminutive stupa to the front. The bronze with a naturally grown patina with areas of malachite and cuprite encrustations.Provenance: From the private collection of Darwin Freeman, collected between 1968-1971, and thence by descent within the same family. Born 1946 in Idaho, USA, Darwin Freeman was a member of the armed forces and later became an avid collector. He met his wife in the mid-1960s, and the pair later relocated to her hometown of Innsbruck, Austria. In 1967, Freeman was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Germany and Thailand. While he was stationed at the Embassy in Bangkok, between 1969 and 1971, he actively began engaging in the exploration and collection of ancient bronzes and other works of art. Upon completing his duty, Freeman arranged for his collection to be shipped to Austria, where it remained in storage until this day.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, signs of weathering, encrustations, casting irregularities, nicks, scratches, remnants of gilt. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, mottled patina. Weight: 5.9 kg (excl. stand), 6.5 kg (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 50 cm (excl. stand and incl. tang), 53 cm (incl. stand)With an associated wood stand. (2)Expert's note: Maitreya is the bodhisattva (future Buddha) who may be born on Earth as soon as a few thousand years from now. This depiction of him was cast in a period during which hardly any Buddhist images were commissioned, and from which few bronzes survive. Two specifically Buddhist features appear in the bronze. One is the presence of the miniature stupa, an emblem of Maitreya (who pays homage to the stupa-enclosed relics of his predecessor Shakyamuni, it can be said, by carrying them on his head). The other is the existence of a small pearl at the bottom of each hair loop. This feature was inherited from an earlier bronze tradition, seen in bodhisattvas belonging to the group found on Plai Bat Hill in northeastern Thailand.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related bronze figure of Maitreya, Angkor period, dated to the early 10th century, 75.5 cm high, in the National Museum of Cambodia, accession number Ga2024, and exhibited in the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, Gods of Angkor: Bronzes from the National Museum of Cambodia, 15 May 2010-23 January 2011, illustrated in the exhibition catalogue, p. 32-34, no. 5.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Zacke, Vienna, 11 April 2024, lot 194 Price: EUR 49,400 or approx.
