拍品描述 翻译
A LARGE GILT-LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF A MONK, RATTANAKOSIN KINGDOMThailand, reign of King Rama III, 1824-1851. Finely cast, the disciple kneeling on a rectangular, tiered base with his hands held in anjali mudra, wearing a close-fitting monastic robe with diapered floral designs and embellished in 'gesso' conveying a lavishly embroidered cloth. The serene face with downcast eyes and slender lips forming a calm smile, flanked by pendulous earlobes, the hair neatly arranged in tight curls.Provenance: From a private collection in the Netherlands.Condition: Good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities. Minor losses to feet and one eye. Flaking, rubbing, and losses to lacquer-gilding. Few minuscule nicks and light surface scratches.Weight: 47.4 kgDimensions: Height 90 cmFigures wearing such patterned robes, a symbol of royalty, were introduced during the reign of King Rama III (reigned 1824-1851), and disappeared thereafter. It is thus most likely that this majestic sculpture was one such royal commission produced under King Rama III's reign.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related bronze figure of a Buddhist monk, exhibited by National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, Unlocking the Vault: Mysteries and Marvels of the Museum. Compare a closely related gilt-copper alloy figure of a Buddhist monk, dated to the 19th century, 53.5 cm high, in the Walters Art Museum, accession number 54.2991. Compare a closely related gilt-lacquered copper alloy figure of a monk, dated to 1800-1932, 48.9 cm high, in the The University of Michigan Museum of Art, accession number 2005/1.455.1.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Bonhams New York, 23 July 2020, lot 841 Price: USD 22,575 or approx. EUR 24,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A gilt lacquer copper alloy figure of Buddha, Thailand, Rattanakosin period, 19th century Expert remark: Compare the related modeling, manner of casting, and lacquer gilding, with similarly ornate sanghati typical of sculpture during the reign of King Rama III. Note the size (90 cm).
