A PERI-DONGSONIAN 'ELEPHANT' CUFF BRACELET, BAN CHIANG, CIRCA 2ND CENTURY BCPublished & Exhibited: Martin Doustar, Art of the Bronze Age in Southeast Asia, Parcours des Mondes 2014, Paris, no. 19.Martin Doustar, Kunstkammer. One Hundred Treasures from the Ancient World, Frieze Masters 2017, London, no. 35.Thailand. Of waisted form, the grooved body of the armband flaring on either end, with a braided band to each rim, paired with another shortly above, surmounted by a stylized elephant standing foursquare, its tail snubbed and back arched with grooved wrinkles, the face with wide eyes, a short trunk and tusks. The bronze covered in a lustrous natural patina with vibrant malachite encrustations.Provenance: The private collection of Dr. Kurt Sandmair, Munich, Germany, thence by descent. Collection of Martin Doustar, Brussels, Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. Kurt Sandmair (1932-2013) was a well-known and highly respected patent and intellectual property lawyer in Munich. He developed a passionate interest in the early cultures of Southeast Asia, where he travelled frequently from the mid-1960s onwards. He was in particular fascinated by the early ceramics of Mainland Southeast Asia. His extensive business contacts in Southeast Asia and his frequent visits to museums, art fairs, and dealers in Europe and the United States encouraged him to assemble one of the most significant collections of early Southeast Asian ceramics. Ready to share his knowledge he contributed to museum exhibitions and publications. Numerous examples from his collection are nowadays in the Five Continents Museum in Munich, and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst in Berlin. Martin Doustar is a Brussels-based art dealer and collector whose career spans more than two decades. He began his professional journey in the early 2000s with a focus on Modern Art, developing a keen interest in the ways early twentieth-century artists were influenced by 'primitive' art from Africa and Oceania. Over time, his connoisseurship expanded into archaeological and ethnographic fields, with particular expertise in the ancient arts of the Pacific, Africa, and Pre-Columbian America, while also encompassing Asian material culture and modern masterpieces. He is the author of several catalogues and has organized thematic exhibitions on a wide range of subjects.Condition: Very good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities. Traces of burial. Few minor nicks, light surfaces scratches, and occasional small losses.Weight: 776 g Dimensions: Length 17 cmThe prehistoric site of Ban Chiang (circa 1500 BC-300 AD) in northeast Thailand, first excavated in 1967, brought to light one of the earliest Bronze Age cultures in Southeast Asia. Archaeological remains from different levels in the soil indicate that the site has been inhabited for thousands of years. Ban Chiang is best known for red-on-buff painted pottery vessels, which were found only in the uppermost (least ancient) layers of soil. Other artifacts uncovered from burial sites suggest a highly developed metal industry. Both male and female adult skeletons were adorned with bronze and iron jewelry such as bracelets and anklets. Beads, rollers, and wire necklaces were found only in the graves of children. The Ban Chiang culture and the Dong Son culture (700 BC-100 AD) of northern Vietnam and China were both influential prehistoric societies in Southeast Asia, sharing notable connections in material culture and technological advancements. Both cultures were skilled in bronze metallurgy, particularly in the production of weapons, tools, and decorative items. Additionally, similarities in pottery styles and burial practices indicate interaction between these societies, possibly through shared trade networks along river systems. Thus, some of the excavated objects from Ban Chiang have been falsely linked to Dong Song in the past.Literature comparison: Compare a related Ban Chiang bronze bracelet with similar tapering form and incised lines, dated approx. 300 BC-200 AD or possibly earlier, 14.6 cm high, in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, object number 1989.7.12.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 17 December 2021, lot 3123Price: HKD 75,600 or approx.
