拍品描述 翻译
A THANGKA DEPICTING SUPERSECRET HAYAGRIVA AND CONSORT, TIBET, 18TH-19TH CENTURYDistemper on cloth. Set inside a frame, behind glass. Superbly rendered, the winged, four-legged, six-armed wrathful deity striding in alidhasana in union with his consort atop prostrate figures on an oval lotus base, his primary hands held to the chest and holding a blood-filled kapala and foliate blossom, the upper secondary hands clutching a ritual hook and lasso, while the lower hands are brandishing a sword and scepter, his body further adorned with a garland of severed heads. Vajravarahi is dressed in a bone apron and holds a kapala in her left hand.Hayagriva's three faces each display a wrathful expression marked by bulging eyes, furrowed brows centered by a third eye, bared teeth, and fiery beard, the flaming hair rising upward and issuing the characteristic horse head above a skull tiara.Provenance: A private collection in Berlin, Germany. Lempertz, Brussels, 18 June 2017, lot 1055 (sold for EUR 4,960 or approx. EUR 6,400 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). The collection of Kristen Tomassi and Axel Dieter Ball, Mallorca, Spain, acquired from the above. Kristen Tomassi, an architect and designer based in Mallorca, was married early in her life to Richard Branson, who was already rising to prominence with Virgin Records. Her enduring partnership was with German entrepreneur and architect Axel Dieter Ball (1942-2026), with whom she co-founded La Residencia in Deià in 1984. The hotel, a family-run haven celebrating art and music, helped shape the luxury hotel scene of Mallorca, where the couple spent most of their lives together until Axel sadly passed away this year. Together, they built an impressive collection of Himalayan art throughout the 1980s and 1990s, purchasing pieces from renowned dealers and auction houses including Rossi & Rossi, David Tremayne, Annapurna, Sotheby's, and Christie's. Objects formerly in their collection have been exhibited by the Museum of Asian Art, Hong Kong, and the Art Institute of Chicago, featuring also in the exhibition catalog by Pratapaditya Pal et al., Himalayas - An Aesthetic Adventure (2003).Condition: Good condition with expected wear, soiling and scattered stains, light creasing and folds, touchups, minor flaking and losses to pigments. The frame in excellent condition with minor wear. Dimensions: Image size 69 x 50 cm, Size incl. frame 80.5 x 62.5 cmThis thangka depicts the winged, horse-headed Supersecret Hayagriva, a rare form of Hayagriva found in lineage and practice only in the Sakya Tradition and the Sera monastery of the Gelug tradition, where they are known as Padma Ishvara and Tamdrin Yang Sang ('Very Secret'), respectively. The deity Begtse Chen is regarded as the special protector deity associated with Padma Ishvara. This meditational deity is likely derived from the Nyingma Kama or Terma traditions, suggested by the following excerpt from a Nyingma liturgical text:"To the Dharma body of all conquerors of the Lotus Lineage, Vajra body of the Dharma Lord Amitabha, In a raging great form, emanating from Avalokiteshvara; Homage to Hayagriva, neighing like a horse." (See Jeff Watt, October 1998, Himalayan Art Resources, item number 23571)Reflecting the deity's association with the Nyingma and Gelug traditions (Sera monastery in particular), both Padmasambhava and Je Tsongkhapa, the founders of these respective traditions, are depicted in the top register.Literature comparison: Compare a related thangka of Supersecret Hayagriva and consort dated 1600s-1820s, formerly in the Alice S. Kandell Collection and now in The Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room of the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, accession number S2017.50a-c.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Bonhams London, 11 May 2017 lot 43Price: GBP 27,500 or approx.
