拍品描述 翻译
Distemper and gilt on cloth. Depicting the Loving Lady of Wisdom at the center, seated in a relaxed posture on a lotus throne with addorsed lions, her right hand holding an amrita vase at the chest, the left hand with a mirror. Behind, an elaborate backrest is crowned with a Khyung ([King] of Birds). Numerous minor deities surround the central figure, peaceful in appearance, wearing silks and jewels, backed by aureoles.Provenance: From an old German private collection.Condition: Good condition with old wear, creasing, small losses and flaking to gilt and pigment, soiling, touchups.Dimensions: Size 63 x 50.5 cmSherap Chamma, Loving Lady of Wisdom, is the meditational form of one of Bon's Four Transcendent Lords, the female deity Satrig Ersang. One of her epithets revers her as, "the one who removes fear."The Bon is a religious and cultural group living in the Himalayas and Central Asia—a community almost unknown in the Western world. Bon predates the northern advance of Buddhism onto the Tibetan Plateau in the seventh century. Despite Buddhism's growth in popularity since the 11th century, the Bon religion and culture have continued up to the present day.Expert's note: In Himalayan painting the female form is represented with a unique feature differentiated from the male, generally from the 16th century onwards. The main observation is the face; the female face is oval with a very rounded forehead. A flat hairline and a horizontal forehead characterize a male face. Depending on the regional style of a painting and the age, along with losses on the surface of the paint, breasts may or may not be apparent - generally they are not. For peaceful deities there is no difference between male and female ornamentation and dress. Hand gestures, objects in the hands and postures are the same for both genders. Observation of the face is the main method to differentiate gender.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related thangka of Sherab Chamma, Eastern Tibet, dated to the 19th century, photographed by the Ligmincha Institute, and illustrated on Himalayan Art Resources, item number 85557.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's New York, 22 March 2018, lot 957Mid-estimate: USD 12,500 or approx. EUR 14,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A thangka depicting Sherab Chamma, Tibet, 18th centuryExpert remark: Compare the closely related subject and related manner of painting and composition. Note the size (71 x 46 cm).
