Kristen Tomassi, an architect and designer based in Mallorca, was married early in her life to Richard Branson, who was already rising to prominence with Virgin Records. Her enduring partnership was with German entrepreneur and architect Axel Dieter Ball (1942-2026), with whom she co-founded La Residencia in Deià in 1984. The hotel, a family-run haven celebrating art and music, helped shape the luxury hotel scene of Mallorca, where the couple spent most of their lives together until Axel sadly passed away this year. Together, they built an impressive collection of Himalayan art throughout the 1980s and 1990s, purchasing pieces from renowned dealers and auction houses including Rossi & Rossi, David Tremayne, Annapurna, Sotheby's, and Christie's. Objects formerly in their collection have been exhibited by the Museum of Asian Art, Hong Kong, and the Art Institute of Chicago, featuring also in the exhibition catalog by Pratapaditya Pal et al., Himalayas - An Aesthetic Adventure (2003).Condition: Good condition with expected wear, minor creasing and folds, flaking and losses to pigment, and soiling. The brocade mounting with few loose threads and minor soiling, the silk cover with small tears and minor losses.Chakrasamvara is the principal transformational deity (yiddam) of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism. He is also the focal deity of the main tantra of the Anuttarayoga Wisdom classification of Buddhism, symbolizing the fulfilment of Wisdom and Compassion when blissfully embracing his consort. Surrounding the principal deity in the present thangka are yellow hat lamas and the lower register painted with two dancing skeletons, enlightened deities bringing wealth, which are flanked by two protectors of the Chakrasamvara Tantra.According to David Snellgrove (Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, Indian Buddhists and Their Tibetan Successors, Boston, 1987, pp. 153-54, "The name Shamvara, or Shambara, itself means Supreme Bliss, the bliss that is the fruit of Tantric meditation. Similarly, Chakrasamvara, literally "joined to the wheel," may be interpreted as "joined to the wheel of wisdom and bliss." Equal to a Buddha, Shamvara is beyond the extremes of samsara and nirvana. His left foot rests on Bhairava, the Terrifier, who represents samsara...each of his faces has three eyes, indicating that he sees the (whole) threefold world and that he knows the substance of the three times (past, present, and future). He has twelve arms indicating that he comprehends the evolution and reversal of the twelvefold causal nexus and eliminates these twelve stages of transmigration.'"Did you know? The Mahasiddha Luipa, who lived in Eastern India around the 10th century, was one of the most famous practitioners of Chakrasamvara, one who can transform themselves from the most dire situation through the power of insightful wisdom. His rejection of putrid food offered to him by an insighful yogini led him to realize that he still retained a 'pea-sized obscuration of royal pride in his heart'. He then began a twelve-year practice to overcome his pride at the Ganges eating fish guts, and hence came to be known as Liupa.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related larger thangka of Chakrasamvara and Vajravarahi, dated to the 18th century, 74.9 x 104.1 cm, in the Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois, object number 1976-27-1.a.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams London, 9 November 2017, lot 218Price: GBP 31,250 or approx.
