拍品描述 翻译
Published: Himalayan Art Resources, item number 58686.Expert's note: It is difficult to underestimate the importance to Tibet and the Buddhist faith of these types of classical manuscript covers. As objects that once acted as the entrance to, and enabled the protection of, sacred Buddhist texts, they are regarded as part of the Dharma (the Teaching), and as such to be revered as greatly as one would the Buddha. This manuscript cover would have been specially commissioned by a monastery or wealthy family to protect a sacred text of the Buddhist canon. This cover was fashioned from hardwood, a material difficult to obtain in Central Tibet. The painting is in an early Tibetan style that clearly emulates the Pala tradition of Northeastern India. For example, the oval bolsters, each with two triangular projections indicating a throne back, are commonly seen in Pala illuminated manuscripts (e.g., Pal, Tibetan Paintings, 1984, p. 46, pl. 5). The occasional shading used for the lotus petals and Vajrasattva's body, as well as the sinuous upper eyelid, can also be traced to India.Surviving with vibrant colors and gold paint, the painted inside of this manuscript cover depicts a pair of arhats revering a green-bodied Vajrasattva and a figure dressed in royal Tibetan attire. Each figure is set against a solid red nimbus and sits on a bicolored lotus base, while the scene is framed by a dark blue background punctuated with red flowers.Provenance: Arnold Lieberman, New York, early 1990s. The collection of Kristen Tomassi and Axel Dieter Ball, Mallorca, Spain, acquired from the above. Bonhams Hong Kong, 20 May 2021, lot 1003, mid-estimate HKD 575,000 or approx. EUR 70,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). The back with an old red seal impressed with the Nepali numerals '2041.' Kristen Tomassi, an architect and designer based in Mallorca, was married early in her life to Richard Branson, who was already rising to prominence with Virgin Records. Her enduring partnership was with German entrepreneur and architect Axel Dieter Ball (1942-2026), with whom she co-founded La Residencia in Deià in 1984. The hotel, a family-run haven celebrating art and music, helped shape the luxury hotel scene of Mallorca, where the couple spent most of their lives together until Axel sadly passed away this year. Together, they built an impressive collection of Himalayan art throughout the 1980s and 1990s, purchasing pieces from renowned dealers and auction houses including Rossi & Rossi, David Tremayne, Annapurna, Sotheby's, and Christie's. Objects formerly in their collection have been exhibited by the Museum of Asian Art, Hong Kong, and the Art Institute of Chicago, featuring also in the exhibition catalog by Pratapaditya Pal et al., Himalayas - An Aesthetic Adventure (2003).Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Little flaking to pigment and gilding with associated small touchups, minor age cracks, and minor chipping to the outer edges. Dimensions: Size 38.4 x 15.6 cmTibetan manuscripts, whose format was inspired by Indian palm-leaf manuscripts, were originally contained between two wooden covers, which in turn were wrapped in cloth to protect them. These wooden covers were often richly decorated, with the designs and iconography often indicating the contents of the scripture they contained. The figure dressed in royal Tibetan attire likely represents Maitreya or Vairocana Buddha in a manner following 11th-century depictions seen at Yemar in Central Tibet (see Henss, The Cultural Monuments of Tibet, Vol. II, 2014, pp.563-4, figs. 803-4).Literature comparison: Compare a closely related interior of a manuscript cover depicting Manjuvajra, Tibet, dated to the late 13th century, 42.5 x 14.3 cm, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1998.75.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams Hong Kong, 24 May 2021, lot 1Price: HKD 627,500 or approx. EUR 76,500 (for two) converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A pair of carved and painted wood sutra covers, Central Tibet, 13th centuryExpert remark: Compare the closely related form and manner of painting. Note the size (11 x 40.3 cm).
