拍品描述 翻译
Tibet. The silk belt is set with seven oblong plaques depicting dancing female deities, interspersed with square plaques and flanked by two plaques of trapezoidal form carved with a chitipati, all suspending a network of strung beads joined by a further thirty-six square plaques at the intersections, all skillfully carved with deities, auspicious symbols, and stylized floral designs. The bottom rung with five lion-mask plaques, each joined by festoons and suspending a final strand of beads terminating with a small bell.Provenance: The collection of Kristen Tomassi and Axel Dieter Ball, Mallorca, Spain, assembled since the 1980s. Kristen Tomassi, an architect and designer based in Mallorca, was married early in her life to Richard Branson, who was already rising to prominence with Virgin Records. Her enduring partnership was with German entrepreneur and architect Axel Dieter Ball (1942-2026), with whom she co-founded La Residencia in Deià in 1984. The hotel, a family-run haven celebrating art and music, helped shape the luxury hotel scene of Mallorca, where the couple spent most of their lives together until Axel sadly passed away this year. Together, they built an impressive collection of Himalayan art throughout the 1980s and 1990s, purchasing pieces from renowned dealers and auction houses including Rossi & Rossi, David Tremayne, Annapurna, Sotheby's, and Christie's. Objects formerly in their collection have been exhibited by the Museum of Asian Art, Hong Kong, and the Art Institute of Chicago, featuring also in the exhibition catalog by Pratapaditya Pal et al., Himalayas - An Aesthetic Adventure (2003).Condition: Good condition with expected wear, minor age cracks, small nicks, few minor losses. Some loose threads and beads.Weight: 1,550 gDimensions: Size 65 x 68.5 cmThis bone apron is a ritual power object. Properly understood in its physical verbal and mental aspects it transforms the wearer from a scattered person (prthag, scattered; jana, person) into the extraordinary “sky walker” or dakini—a female Buddha embodying the wisdom (prajna) of emptiness (shunyata) which is at once the ultimate reality and origin of all things. She can be terrifying as befits her garment, for bone symbolizes the impermanence (anityatva) and thus ceaseless momentary (kshanika) transformations that characterize the Tibetan Buddhist cosmos. The dakinis carved into the large bone lozenges around which the network (jala) of bone beads have been woven (tantra, Tibetan gyu) are potential presences; for in ritual they come virtually alive insofar as they have been consecrated (pratishthita, Tibetan rabney). This ritual symbolically transforms the wearer as a dakini or “sky walker” capable of moving from one distant region of the universe to another, by virtue of the fact that they have realized all phenomena (sarva dharma), lack cores (svabhava), and are thus empty (shunya).Bone aprons are used both in Tantric rituals and religious dance performances. These ornaments are generally paired with a brocade costume and worn by a person representing a deity in tantric Buddhist rituals and dances. The carved designs on the bone are both figurative and decorative. The majority of the known sets in public and private collections have figures from the Chakrasamvara cycle of Tantric practice. The full mandala of Chakrasamvara has sixty-two deities. An elaborate set of bone ornaments would have the most important figures represented from the mandala but not necessarily all sixty-two deities. Skeleton figures representing spirits and ghosts from a cemetery or charnel ground are also common decorative elements.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related ritual bone apron, dated to the 18th century, 81.3 x 55.9 cm, in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, object number B60M101.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Sotheby's New York, 19 March 2014, lot 126 Price: USD 18,750 or approx.
