拍品描述 翻译
Expert's note: The present sculpture belongs to the refined tradition of Nepalese devotional wood carving that flourished in the Kathmandu Valley during the early Malla period, when Newar artists achieved a remarkable synthesis of spiritual intensity and courtly elegance. Closely related examples preserved in both museum and private collections attest to the central role of carved wood imagery within the ritual and architectural culture of medieval Nepal, where sculpture animated monasteries, shrines, and palace sanctuaries alike. The figure's attenuated proportions, fluid tribhanga stance, and lyrical treatment of ornament reflect the aesthetic ideals of Newar craftsmanship at its height, revealing the sophisticated artistic vocabulary that would profoundly influence Tibetan Buddhist art for centuries. Such works embody the fusion of sensual grace and transcendental calm characteristic of Kathmandu Valley sculpture, conveying both the devotional immediacy and metaphysical refinement central to Vajrayana Buddhist practice.Finely carved, standing in slight tribhanga on an elaborate small lotus base, wearing a loose-fitting dhoti with delicate folds and well-detailed floral hems, tied at the waist with a belt suspending pendent beads, and adorned with a floral shawl and beaded jewelry around the neck and arms. The serene face with almond-shaped eyes, sinuously arched brows, and a prominent rectangular urna, with slender lips forming a benevolent smile, flanked by ears adorned with large earrings. The hair, topped by a jewel and secured with an ornate bejeweled crown, falls elegantly over her shoulders in wavy strands.Provenance: Nagel, Stuttgart, 6 June 2015, lot 1509. A private collection in Berlin, Germany, acquired from the above. A copy of the invoice from Nagel dated 6 June 2015 and stating a purchase price for the present lot of EUR 2,660 or approx. EUR 3,500 (adjusted for inflation at the time of writing) accompanies this lot.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, obvious losses, minor age cracks, flaking and losses to lacquer gilding, minute nicks, few small chips.Weight: 937 gDimensions: Height 31.5 cm (excl. stand), 35 cm (incl. stand)The cult of Tara occupied a central position within the devotional life of the medieval Kathmandu Valley, where Newar Buddhism cultivated some of the most sophisticated artistic traditions of the Himalayan world. Revered as the embodiment of enlightened compassion and salvific wisdom, Tara functioned simultaneously as universal protectress and intimate guide for the devotee, invoked in rites concerned with healing, longevity, and protection from worldly dangers. Sculptural representations produced during the Malla period reveal the distinctive elegance of Nepalese aesthetics: attenuated proportions, sensuous linearity, and a serene spiritual inwardness derived ultimately from the great Buddhist traditions of Pala-period India. The present figure, with its graceful tribhanga posture and lotus-bearing gesture, belongs to this refined lineage of early Nepalese devotional imagery, exemplifying the extraordinary sophistication of Kathmandu Valley wood sculpture at a moment when Newar artists exercised profound influence across the Buddhist world, particularly in Tibet.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related painted ash wood figure of Avalokiteshvara, Nepal, 15th-16th century, 47.9 cm high, in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, object number B68S12.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 17 October 2001, lot 55 Price: USD 10,575 or approx.
