拍品描述 翻译
Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art at Oxford University (the predecessor of Oxford Authentication) on 25 October 1988, based on sample number 466q32, sets the firing date of the sample taken between 900 and 1500 years ago, consistent with the dating of this lot. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.China, 618-907. The tall figure standing atop a rocky base, his hands clasped beneath a modeled muff protruding from the long sleeves, a panel on the chest and back beneath the stiff collar, the long, flared skirt falling to the ground, with upturned 'cloud-toe' shoes. His head finely detailed with voluminous lips below a wide nose and calm eyes, and surmounted by a tall cap applied with a soaring bird.Provenance: S Marchant & Son, London, by 1988. An old private collection in Germany, acquired from the above on 31 May 1990 and thence by descent. A copy of the invoice from Marchant (Marchanson Limited), signed by Richard P. Marchant, confirming the dating above, and stating a purchase price for the present lot of GBP 10,250 or approx. EUR 30,000 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. S Marchant & Son was founded in 1925 by Samuel Sydney Marchant (1897-1975). It held a large stock of Asian art, but also dealt in arms and armor, paintings, and continental porcelain. In 1953, Richard Marchant joined his father and from that time onwards the partnership specialized in Asian art. Nowadays the company's focus is on Imperial Chinese Ming and Qing porcelains, jades, cloisonné, pottery, and works of art.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, firing irregularities, signs of prolonged burial, encrustations, old repairs with few touchups as expected from authentic Tang dynasty excavations. Losses to ancient pigments, small nicks, shallow surface scratches. A small hole from sample-taking to the base.Weight: 8.8 kgDimensions: Height 89.5 cmEarthenware tomb figures such as the present one made up a sizable segment of the pottery manufactured during the Tang period. Literally hundreds of figures, including soldiers, servants, musicians, tomb guardians, horses, and camels were placed in tombs to provide for the needs of the dead. Made in all sizes and in a wide range of qualities, these figures reflect the status of the deceased. By the beginning of the eighth century, the sculptural quality of Chinese tomb figures had reached its zenith. They were modeled with unprecedented naturalism and animation. As never before, the potter imparted life and movement to his creations, capturing the essence of a gesture or a mood with superlative fidelity. The small bird ornament frequently seen on the hats of Tang dynasty tomb officials can be understood as a stylized auspicious bird, most likely referencing the phoenix. Although these birds are rendered schematically, their placement on official headgear aligns with long-standing Chinese associations between the phoenix and rank, virtue, and harmonious rule. In elite visual culture, the phoenix functions as a symbol of moral authority and refined status, and its use in funerary sculpture represents the wish that the deceased retain dignity and auspicious standing in the afterlife.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related painted pottery figure of a civil official wearing a similar cap with bird emblem, dated 7th-8th century, 83.5 cm tall, in the Walters Art Museum, accession number 49.2387.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's London, 18 May 2007, lot 113Price: GBP 4,800 or approx.
