A GROUP OF TWO INSCRIBED ARCHAISTIC BRONZE RITUAL VESSELS, JUE, QING DYNASTYExpert's note: The present pair of archaistic bronze jue reflects the enduring role of ancient ritual forms within the ceremonial and scholarly culture of the Qing dynasty. Modeled on Shang and Zhou prototypes, vessels of this type were not conceived merely as antiquarian curiosities, but continued to serve in temple and ancestral rites, where archaic bronzes were regarded as appropriate implements for libation offerings and sacrificial observances. The inscription on one vessel, Guansheng miao jiqi (關聖廟祭器, “ritual vessel for the Temple of Lord Guan”), is particularly significant in this regard, directly identifying the jue as a ceremonial object intended for ritual use within a temple dedicated to Guan Yu, the deified general revered as Guandi. Such inscriptions provide rare documentary evidence for the continued employment of archaistic bronzes in living religious practice during the Qing period.China, 1644-1912. Each finely cast, the taller vessel supported on three blade-form legs, the body decorated with taotie masks divided by narrow flanges, detailed with shou characters and leiwen, below a band of plantain leaves, and set with a curved handle emerging from the open jaws of a mythical beast. Two upright posts rise from the rim, flanking the long pouring spout. The vessel is cast beneath the handle with a three-character archaistic inscription including a human pictogram. The vessel on the right, of smaller size, is likewise rising from three sinuous legs, decorated with highly stylized anthropomorphic masks, to a globular body incised with subtle floral motifs, fitted with a small handle in the form of a highly abstracted mythical creature, and is surmounted by an rounded pouring spout divided by two slender posts terminating in lotus-bud finials. The underside of the mouth minutely punched and incised with a shou roundel, and incised with a five-character inscription 'Guansheng miao jiqi' ('ritual vessel of the Temple of Guan Yu').Provenance: From a private collection in Austria.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, casting irregularities, few minuscule nicks. Fine, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight: 1,049 g (total)Dimensions: Height 11.5 to 19.6 cmVessels of this type were deeply prized by the literati elite for their evocation of antiquity and their close association with epigraphic scholarship. As Ulrich Hausmann observed, ancient bronzes and their inscriptions, long studied through rubbings and stylistic analysis, became integral to scholarly and artistic cultivation, influencing generations of calligraphers and connoisseurs. Within this context, archaistic bronzes occupied a dual role: as functional ritual implements employed in temples and ancestral halls, and as refined expressions of erudition and continuity with the classical past.
