拍品描述 翻译
? A RARE SILVER-INLAID BRONZE BOTTLE VASE, WARRING STATES PERIOD-HAN DYNASTYExpert's note:The silver inlays on the present lot show remnants of gilding, with typical rubbing and flaking, suggesting that the inlays were originally entirely gilt. Use of gilded metal, as opposed to pure gold, for inlays on bronze vessels appears to be undocumented for this period. Bronze workshops of the Warring States and early Han often experimented with new techniques, particularly when decorating forms less commonly associated with ritual use. While established inlay materials include gold, silver, and copper, a recent technical study of an inlaid bronze hu dated 5th-4th century?BC in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (object number 2021.259) has documented low-tin bronze as an underreported inlay material, indicating that alternative metallic inlay practices may have been more widespread than previously recognized (see Marlene Yandrisevits et al., “Technical Investigation of Bronze Strip Inlay on an Eastern Zhou Bronze Vessel in the Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York,” in Technical Studies of Asian Art: Proceedings of the Seventh Forbes Symposium at the Freer Gallery of Art, 2026, pp. 94-107).China, 475 BC-220 AD. The slightly compressed globular body raised on a short splayed foot and rising to a slender waisted neck with lipped rim, and finely inlaid in silver with three bands enclosing battle scenes with warriors carrying arrows, spears, and other weapons, the neck encircled by four upright stiff leaves enclosing scroll designs.Provenance: A private collection in Scotland, by family repute bought back from East Asia before 1950 and thence by descent. A private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above in 1998 via the local trade.Condition: Very good condition with expected wear, casting irregularities, signs of prolonged burial, encrustations, corrosion, light dents, minor losses to the inlays. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, mottled patina with malachite and cuprite encrustations.Weight: 1,203 gDimensions: Height 23.5 cmThe form of the present vase is atypical within the corpus of Han dynasty bronzes. Nevertheless, closely related shapes are known among pottery vessels of the Warring States period, suggesting that the present example may reflect the continuation or reinterpretation of earlier ceramic prototypes in a bronze medium. For a pottery vase of similar form, dated Warring States period, see Christie's New York, 22 March 1999, lot 204.The figural ornamentation of this vessel draws upon the stone-carved reliefs that once adorned the tombs of nobles and high-ranking officials during the late Eastern Han dynasty. These reliefs depict the military confrontations between the Qin and Han dynasties and used to be arranged in horizontal registers that covered the brick or stone panels forming the interior and exterior walls of funerary chambers. See one example from Shandong province, dated to the mid-2nd century, in the Portland Art Museum, accession number 38.51. See also a rubbing of hunting scenes from a stone relief at a late Eastern Han tomb at Longyangdian Village in Tengzhou County, Shandong Province, now held by the Museum of Tengzhou County.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 25 March 2022, lot 719Price: USD 2,760,000 or approx.
