Sam Bernstein is an internationally recognized specialist dealer in Chinese antiquities. He has authored thirteen volumes on Chinese art including The Emperor's Jade Suit and Chinese Jade: The Immortal Stone. Over the past several decades, S. Bernstein & Co. has helped to form some of the great collections of Oriental art in the world, with clients including The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Birmingham Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, Hong Kong Museum of History, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Greater Victoria Museum of Art, The Margaret & Trammel S. Crow Asian Collection, The Samuel P. Harn Museum, Louisiana State University Museum of Art, Northwestern University Collection, and The Phoenix Art Museum. Expert's note: Jade axes such as the present lot are much rarer than bi disks or even the cong tube, as they were seemingly reserved for only the most elite tombs and there is usually only one such axe found in each of these tombs.China, circa 3rd millennium BC. The broad axe of trapezoidal form, expertly carved with a beveled cutting edge and a large circular hafting hole drilled from both sides and retaining a central ridge. The finely polished, opaque stone of a mottled green color with deep russet and brown patches and veins as well as dark striations.Provenance: From a private collection in France.Condition: Overall good condition with expected wear, signs of prolonged burial, traces of weathering, few minuscule losses, the stone with natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairlines. The blade with a small chip to one corner with associated old repair.Weight: 247.1 gDimensions: Length 15.3 cmWhile collectively termed 'axe' in English, jade axes have variations of translations in Chinese. Ceremonial jades of a trapezoidal form with a straight or curved edge would be named 'yue', produced for a long duration of time from the Neolithic period to the Zhou dynasty. As a ceremonial weapon, jade 'yue' symbolized power in ancient Chinese culture, it was attached to a wood pole to be carried by officials as an emblem of authority.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's London, 6 November 2012, lot 74 Price: GBP 15,000 or approx.
