拍品描述 翻译
China, 1644-1912. Of oval form, with deep, rounded sides supported on a short, subtly flared foot and rising to a slightly everted rim. Finely carved on opposing sides are two sinuous youthful dragons climbing the surface of the vessel and gripping its rim, each bearing a slender body that extends into a long, three-pronged tail and a powerful, canine-like head, with forelegs distinctly ending in bovine hooves.Provenance: London trade.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and inherent natural imperfections. Expected traces of handling and use to the interior. The finely polished surface with an overall smooth, unctuous feel.Weight: 172.1 gDimensions: Width 10.6 cmThis agate cup was most likely used to hold water for diluting ink or rinsing calligraphy brushes. Two archaistic dragons, shown in dynamic motion across the exterior as they climb toward the rim, form a decorative motif that became increasingly common in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when three-dimensional animal forms were frequently carved on the surfaces of vessels. This decorative approach was first brought to a high level of refinement by craftsmen working in horn, whose luxury objects exerted a strong influence on bronze casters, as well as jade and agate carvers, who subsequently adopted similar compositional schemes in their own media. See a related jade cup with a chilong on lotus, dated Ming or Qing dynasty, 17th-18th centuries, 10.1 cm wide, in the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, accession number S1987.776.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's London, 9 November 2011, lot 748 Price: GBP 3,500 or approx.
