China. A large and fine specimen of malachite, polished to the front with a fine luster to display the innumerable malachite botryoids in cross-section, with their rich concentric patterns in shades of green and emerald.Provenance: From a Spanish private collection, acquired in China in 2009.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, few tiny age cracks, and varnish to the front.Weight: 7.1 kg (excl. stand), 9.5 kg (incl. stand)Dimensions: Length 31.8 cm (excl. stand), Height 36.8 cm (incl. stand)With fitted wood stand finely carved in openwork. (2)This exceptional malachite slice displays vivid emerald-green hues and intricate natural banding—hallmarks of high-quality material. Formed over millennia as a secondary mineral in copper-rich environments, malachite often occurs alongside azurite, chrysocolla, and cuprite, creating its distinctive layered patterns. In China, malachite (lüqing) holds a deep-rooted cultural and artistic legacy. Its history is closely tied to early copper use in the Bronze Age, when the mineral was likely first encountered during ore extraction. Prized for both color and versatility, it became an important pigment in the celebrated “blue-and-green” (qinglü) landscape tradition, associated with painters such as Li Sixun and Li Zhaodao. Beyond painting, malachite was used in medicine and decorative arts, while its natural beauty earned it a place among the scholar's objects recorded by Du Wan and later as gongshi (scholar's rocks).During the Qing Dynasty, this appreciation deepened as rare and exotic stones became highly sought after. Malachite's rich green tones—symbolizing prosperity, harmony, and longevity—made it especially desirable among scholars, collectors, and court elites. By the late 19th century, large quantities of malachite, likely sourced from the Ural Mountains, entered China through trade networks. Chinese artisans favored refined, smaller-scale works, transforming the stone into brush holders, vessels, and ornamental carvings adorned with auspicious motifs such as dragons, phoenixes, and lotus flowers.Malachite was valued not only for its beauty but also for its perceived metaphysical properties. In keeping with Daoist concepts of qi and balance, it was believed to absorb negative energy and promote well-being. Pieces like this were often appreciated as miniature landscapes in stone, their swirling patterns inviting contemplation within the scholar's studio.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related malachite scholar's rock in the form of a fantastic mountain, dated 19th-20th century, 33.2 cm long, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2021.95a, b. Compare a related malachite dish on a wood stand, dated Qing dynasty, 20.7 cm long, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, reference number 故00105490.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 21 October 2025, lot 120Price: USD 21,590 or approx.
