Height: 46.5 cm (18 5/16 in)
The stout pear-shaped zun vessel modelled after an ancient bronze hu, flanked by a pair of elaborately moulded ruyi cloud-form handles finished in rich coral red enamel. The exterior is fully decorated in fine famille rose polychrome enamels with the iconic Hundred Deer motif, set within an expansive mountainous pine landscape.
Dozens of spotted sika deer of varying sizes wander amid gnarled pine trees, rocky crags and flowing mountain streams, rendered with meticulous detail to their spotted coats, antlers and lifelike postures. Layered turquoise and celadon enamels define rolling mountain ranges, creating profound spatial depth characteristic of high-quality 19th-century Chinese porcelain painting.
The base bears a red seal six-character mark reading Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi, a later Qianlong-period apocryphal mark typical of mid-to-late Qing ceramic production. A vintage antique dealer paper label remains affixed to the underside, inscribed “POWDER ENAMEL VASE WITH HUNDRED DEER FIGURE”.
The 'Hundred Deer' (Bai Lu) motif carries auspicious symbolism: the Chinese character lu (deer) is a homophone for wealth and official rank, embodying wishes for prosperous career advancement, longevity and abundant fortune. The ruyi handles further signify good fortune and fulfilment of all wishes. The vessel retains its original glaze finish with minimal wear consistent with its age.
