It was produced in collaboration with the publisher Tsutaya Kichizō, who would later publish Hiroshige’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Commonly known as the Vertical Tōkaidō because of its distinctive vertical ōban format, the series belongs to a period in the 1850s during which Hiroshige worked almost exclusively in this orientation. The compositions draw heavily on the tradition of gazetteer-style bird’s-eye views while also incorporating the kinzōgata(“foreground-zoom”) technique that became a hallmark of Hiroshige’s late work. Nearly all of the designs employ sinuous S-shaped compositional structures, enhancing the illusion of depth and guiding the viewer’s eye through the landscape. The series depicts the fifty-three post stations of the Tōkaidō(“Eastern Sea Road”), the principal route linking the shogunal capital of Edo with the imperial capital of Kyoto. Hiroshige had first explored this subject in his celebrated Hōeidō Tōkaidō series of 1833, a landmark achievement that established his reputation, alongside Katsushika Hokusai, as one of the leading masters of landscape print design. The adoption of the vertical format enabled Hiroshige to revisit and reinterpret many scenes he had portrayed previously, offering fresh perspectives on some of the most familiar and celebrated locations along the route- Framed and glazed Hiroshige, Utagawa Japan(1797 - 1858) 33,4 - 35cmx22 - 23,5cm 17 ?ban tate-e, Holzschnitte, Tusche auf Papier aus der Serie ?Berühmte Ansichten der dreiundfünfzig Stationen“(Goj?san tsugi meisho zue), auch bekannt als die Vertikale T?kaid?.
