A collector’s seal. From the private collection of Dr Adam Breuer(1868-1944), acquired ca. 1900 - Zhang Feng, originally named Feng(飌), with the courtesy name Dafeng and various art names such as Shangyuan Laoren, Zhenxiang Fokong, and Shengzhou Daoshi, was born in Shangyuan County(part of present-day Nanjing, Jiangsu Province). He was a painter of the Jinling School during the transition from the Ming to the Qing dynasty and a renowned Ming loyalist. His painting style was distinctive; unbound by any specific lineage or school, he focused primarily on expressing his inner emotions. In the art circles of his time, he was described as a "solitary traveler" - an artist who walked his own path and established a unique style of his own. His works often embody a longing for the fallen Ming dynasty and a reclusive sentiment reflecting his refusal to serve the new regime, holding special significance in art history. He is also the figure after whom Zhang Daqian named his studio, "Dafeng". The painting depicting two walkers in a winter landscape with a bridge was published in the exhibition “Chinese Art” at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1929, no. 790, and all the paintings are listed in the auction catalogue by Otto Kümmel, “The A. Breuer Collection”, Cassirer and Helbing, Berlin, 14 May 1929, see lots 289-294 - On the reverse of each landscape painting, a label from the Royal Academy of Arts, London. International Exhibition of Chinese Art, 1935-6. Ser. Nos. 2883 and 2884, which, however, do not correspond to the catalogue numbers in the exhibition catalogue; the painting which was published in Berlin in 1929, is listed here in this exhibition under No. 2981 and the second landscpae painting from our group is published under no. 3000, page 269 - Minimal signs of age Zhang Feng(t?tig 1628-1662) attr.: Vier Albumbl?tter mit V?geln und Landschaften China, Qing-Dynastie 35,5x26,2cm(54,5x44cm R.) Aus der Privatsammlung Dr. Adam Breuer(1868 - 1944), erworben um 1900 - Zhang Feng, ursprünglich Feng(飌) genannt, mit dem H?flichkeitsnamen Dafeng und verschiedenen Künstlernamen wie Shangyuan Laoren, Zhenxiang Fokong und Shengzhou Daoshi - wurde im Kreis Shangyuan(heute Teil von Nanjing in der Provinz Jiangsu) geboren.
