Maeda Masataka was a lacquer artist active during the early 20th century, associated with the continued refinement of traditional maki-e craftsmanship during the Meiji and Taisho periods. His works demonstrate a sophisticated command of classical lacquer techniques, including takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, and the incorporation of metallic and inlaid materials. Like many lacquer artists of the period, he drew inspiration from the great decorative traditions of the Edo period, particularly the bold compositions and poetic imagery of the Rinpa school.
The present kogo is a faithful miniature adaptation of a celebrated lacquer design by Ogata Korin (1658–1716), preserved in the Seikado Bunko Art Museum, Tokyo, and designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Korin’s lacquer designs, characterized by their striking abstraction, rhythmic compositions, and sophisticated interplay of gold, silver, and contrasting materials, exerted a profound influence on generations of later craftsmen.

The Rinpa tradition
, named after Korin, emerged in Kyoto in the early Edo period and became one of Japan’s most influential artistic movements. Drawing upon classical court poetry, literature, and nature imagery, Rinpa artists
transformed familiar subjects into bold and elegant compositions. Revived with renewed enthusiasm during the Meiji period, the style remained particularly influential in the applied arts, where lacquer artists adapted its distinctive aesthetic to luxury objects such as writing boxes, incense containers, and tea utensils.
Auction comparison:
Compare a related inlaid suzuribako with a similar Rinpa-inspired design by Heian Mitsuaki and Mitsuishi, early 20th century, 27 x 25.5 x 7.5 cm, sold at Bonhams, Property from the Collection of Drs.
