拍品描述 翻译
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Egypt, 664-332 BC. Skillfully modelled, the anthropomorphic figure depicted striding forward with the left leg advanced upon a rectangular base, the arms hang straight at the sides, while clad in a simple loincloth, crossed and secured around the waist, leaving the torso exposed. The carefully defined avian head characterized by a prominent curved beak and long locks of hair falling over the shoulders. A vertical support projects from the back and is pierced with a small circular perforation intended for suspension. Provenance: Julia Schottlander, London, by 2003. Jorgen Ruben, acquired from the above. In the Jorgen Ruben Collection for 23 years . Julia Schottlander (b. 1955) is a London-based dealer in antiquities who opened a gallery in Bryanston Square, London, in the 1980s, later trading under the name Tetragon. Active primarily during the 1990s and early 2000s, she specializes in small-format antiquities, particularly Ancient Greek and Egyptian bronzes and artifacts, and donated numerous objects to the British Museum and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Jorgen Ruben is a Danish art dealer and collector who has been active for over four decades and is highly regarded in the fields of Asian art and classical antiquities. Raised in an art-conscious family, Ruben was exposed early to both modern painting and European decorative arts. He began working in the art trade in the mid-1970s, first with Persian rugs and later with antiques, while travels to Iran and a visit to Persepolis sparked his lasting interest in antiquity. After studies in Copenhagen and London, he worked in England with a dealer in early furniture, before travelling widely in Latin America and Asia, deepening his knowledge of regional art and culture. In 1984 Ruben opened a gallery in Copenhagen dealing in Asian antiquities. He was later active in London and, in the early 2000s, operated the Brussels gallery Classic Art. Much of his career, however, has been conducted privately from home, selling by appointment to collectors, galleries, and museums. Ruben has always bought selectively, choosing only works that deeply engaged him, and often keeping them for many years until placing them with a collector he felt truly understood them. Important Note: For essential information on the Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger and provenance documentation please visit here: www.zacke.at/rubencollection_ledger Condition: Very good condition, with expected wear, firing irregularities, signs of prolonged burial, encrustations, few minuscule glaze losses. Weight: 2.1 g Dimensions: Height 3.4 cm Thoth is mostly associated with two animals , the ibis and the baboon. This example depicts the deity in human form with the head of the latter. While his association with the ibis is primarily linked to writing and knowledge, due to the perceived majesty of the bird and its connection with order and observation, his association with the baboon relates to time and the observation of the sky. Thoth was also credited with healing powers , which contributed to the popularity of his image on mummy amulets. This protective function may likewise be linked to his role in the afterlife, where he served as the divine scribe who recorded the outcome of the final judgment, determining whether the deceased had led a virtuous life and was worthy of entering the hereafter. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related faience Thoth amulet, dated Late Period-Ptolemaic Period, 3.4 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 96.21.1. Compare a closely related faience Thoth amulet, dated Late Period, 5.1 cm high, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, inventory number INV 1170.
