拍品描述 翻译
A GILT-LACQUERED BRONZE HEAD OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, AYUTTHAYA PERIOD, 15TH-16TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 143, OK 2007, Thai Ayutthaya 15th-16th c. bronze Buddha head, Haslund coll. before 1970” Gallery price: EUR 18,000 or approx. EUR 30,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. The ledger establishes that this object was located in Europe before the UNESCO 1970 Convention entered into force. Expert’s note: This magnificent head of a Buddha belonged to a large-scale standing or seated image. That it was cast independently of the body is clear from the ‘neck collar’ where it would have originally been riveted or soldered onto the torso. It has all the hallmarks of Buddhahood, the auspicious signs (lakshanas) that marked out the bodhisattva Shakyamuni as one destined for full awakening. These include the skull protuberance (ushnisha), here particularly pronounced. The distended earlobes and tufts of hair represented as clock-wise spirals, both of which resulted from the renunciation, are given prominence. Stylistically, it belongs to the high period of Buddha production in the early Ayutthaya period. While the Siamese capital of Ayutthaya is its probable place of casting, we cannot say with certainty, as the prevailing style was widely practiced in this period of political unity. Thailand. Superbly cast, the serene face sensitively modeled with carefully delineated downcast eyes inlaid in mother-of-pearl and black lacquer below elegantly arched brows converging on a narrow nose bridge, the bow-shaped lips forming a subtle smile, flanked by elongated earlobes, and the hair arranged in tight snail-shell curls over the ushnisha. Provenance: Ole Haslund, Copenhagen, Denmark, before 1970, thence by descent. Oliver Klitgaard, Denmark, acquired from the above. Jorgen Ruben, acquired from the above in 2007. In the Jorgen Ruben Collection for 19 years . Ole Georg Haslund (1877-1962) was one of the most important Danish art and antiques dealers of the 20th century. Trained as a painter, furniture designer, and cabinetmaker, he opened his first shop in Copenhagen in 1905 and, together with Svend Heyman, developed Ole Haslunds Hus into an internationally renowned antiques business and a central institution of Copenhagen cultural life. Haslund’s importance lay not only in the scale of his business, later described as the largest of its kind in the Nordic countries, but also in his role as a tastemaker: his refined eye for furniture, textiles, color, and decorative arts helped shape the interiors of several generations of Danish collectors. His standing within Danish artistic society is reflected in his association with artists such as Gerda Wegener, who painted his portrait in 1927. In 1941, Haslund established the Ole Haslund Artist Foundation, to which he later left much of his fortune, securing his legacy as both a dealer and a patron of Danish artistic life. Oliver Klitgaard is a Danish antiques dealer and collector specializing in Asian art, archaeology, ethnographic material, and antiquities. Based in Copenhagen, he is known for his longstanding friendship with Prince Henrik of Denmark, with whom he shared a passion for jade and Asian art, undertaking numerous collecting trips to China over more than two decades. Jorgen Ruben is a Danish art dealer and collector who has been active for over four decades and is highly regarded in the fields of Asian art and classical antiquities. Raised in an art-conscious family, Ruben was exposed early to both modern painting and European decorative arts. He began working in the art trade in the mid-1970s, first with Persian rugs and later with antiques, while travels to Iran and a visit to Persepolis sparked his lasting interest in antiquity. After studies in Copenhagen and London, he worked in England with a dealer in early furniture, before travelling widely in Latin America and Asia, deepening his knowledge of regional art and culture. In 1984 Ruben opened a gallery in Copenhagen dealing in Asian antiquities. He was later active in London and, in the early 2000s, operated the Brussels gallery Classic Art. Much of his career, however, has been conducted privately from home, selling by appointment to collectors, galleries, and museums. Ruben has always bought selectively, choosing only works that deeply engaged him, and often keeping them for many years until placing them with a collector he felt truly understood them.
