拍品描述 翻译
A ROMAN BRONZE FIGURE OF VENUS, CIRCA 1ST-2ND CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2012: “No. 719, Roman Bronze fig. of Venus, 1st / 2nd century, H.: 13.00 cm, Prov.: Belgian coll. ca. 1980, DD 2009” Gallery price: EUR 8,450 or approx. EUR 12,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Depicted standing in contrapposto, her sensuously modeled body with broad hips and small breasts, the arms outstretched with palms facing upward, her head tilted slightly to the right, the face with finely cast features, the hair center-parted and tied in a chignon at the back, with a wavy tress falling onto each shoulder. Provenance: Michel Daheb, Brussels, Belgium, ca. 1980. Jorgen Ruben, acquired from the above in 2009. In the Jorgen Ruben Collection for 17 years . Jorgen Ruben is a Danish art dealer and collector who has been active for over four decades and is highly regarded in the fields of Asian art and classical antiquities. Raised in an art-conscious family, Ruben was exposed early to both modern painting and European decorative arts. He began working in the art trade in the mid-1970s, first with Persian rugs and later with antiques, while travels to Iran and a visit to Persepolis sparked his lasting interest in antiquity. After studies in Copenhagen and London, he worked in England with a dealer in early furniture, before travelling widely in Latin America and Asia, deepening his knowledge of regional art and culture. In 1984 Ruben opened a gallery in Copenhagen dealing in Asian antiquities. He was later active in London and, in the early 2000s, operated the Brussels gallery Classic Art. Much of his career, however, has been conducted privately from home, selling by appointment to collectors, galleries, and museums. Ruben has always bought selectively, choosing only works that deeply engaged him, and often keeping them for many years until placing them with a collector he felt truly understood them. Important Note: For essential information on the Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger and provenance documentation please visit here: www.zacke.at/rubencollection_ledger Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, signs of prolonged burial, encrustations, minor dings and nicks, losses to attributes. The right arm with an old repair, and the base possibly with minor old fills. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown patina with malachite and cuprite encrustations. Weight: 265 g Dimensions: Height 13 cm (the figure), 16 cm (total) Venus, the Roman goddess of love , beauty, fertility, and prosperity, occupied a central place in the visual culture of the ancient world. Adapted from the Greek Aphrodite yet distinctly Roman in her associations, she was revered not only as an embodiment of sensual grace and feminine idealization, but also as a powerful ancestral and political deity, especially through her connection to Aeneas and the Julian line. Small bronze figures of Venus, such as the present example, would have appealed to both private devotion and aesthetic appreciation, presenting the goddess in an intimate and enduring medium that captures the refinement, elegance, and quiet allure for which her image was celebrated throughout the Roman Empire. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related bronze figure of Venus, dated to the 2 nd -3 rd century, 10.5 cm high, in the Harvard Art Museum, object number 1977.216.3412. Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie’s London, 7 December 2006, lot 140 Price: GBP 7,800 or approx. EUR 16,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Description: A bronze figure of Venus, Roman, circa 1 st or 2 nd century AD, or 16 th century Expert remark: Compare the closely related modeling and manner of casting. Note the size (12.7 cm).
