A RARE BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, LAN NA KINGDOM, 14TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Northern Thailand. Finely cast, the Buddha is seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus pedestal with raised on a broad octagonal base, holding his right hand in bhumisparsha mudra and his left in dhyana mudra, wearing monastic robes draped over his left shoulder, his calm face with half-lowered eyes, bow-shaped brows and full lips forming a silent smile. His hair arranged in ring punched curls over the topped by a jewel. Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen, Copenhagen, by repute 2014. Jorgen Ruben, acquired from the above. In the Jorgen Ruben Collection for around 12 years . Jorgen Ruben is a Danish art dealer and collector who has been active for over four decades and is highly regarded in the fields of Asian art and classical antiquities. Raised in an art-conscious family, Ruben was exposed early to both modern painting and European decorative arts. He began working in the art trade in the mid-1970s, first with Persian rugs and later with antiques, while travels to Iran and a visit to Persepolis sparked his lasting interest in antiquity. After studies in Copenhagen and London, he worked in England with a dealer in early furniture, before travelling widely in Latin America and Asia, deepening his knowledge of regional art and culture. In 1984 Ruben opened a gallery in Copenhagen dealing in Asian antiquities. He was later active in London and, in the early 2000s, operated the Brussels gallery Classic Art. Much of his career, however, has been conducted privately from home, selling by appointment to collectors, galleries, and museums. Ruben has always bought selectively, choosing only works that deeply engaged him, and often keeping them for many years until placing them with a collector he felt truly understood them. Important Note: For essential information on the Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger and provenance documentation please visit here: www.zacke.at/rubencollection_ledger Condition: Good condition with old wear and manufacturing irregularities including tiny nicks and small dents, fissures and small losses to the back of the base. Weight: 709 g Dimensions: Height 17.5 cm Ceasing to represent the Buddha in a Khmer manner by the 13th century , the emergent Thai kingdoms of Sukhothai and Lan Na developed their own emblematic Buddha images. Coded within the present figure is an intriguing multiculturalism, with a physique and iconography drawn from Indian Gupta and Pala prototypes as they filtered through Pagan and Sri Lanka. The sculpture is a classic example of the Lan Na kingdom's Phra Singh type of Buddha image. It characteristically depicts Buddha seated in 'double lotus' posture, extending his right hand to claim victory over Mara's last attempts to entrap him. Other defining features include the jewel finial above the ushnisha, the robe in 'open mode', and a monastic shawl draped high over the left shoulder. The Lan Na Kingdom was founded in 1292 by Mangrai and developed into a powerful Buddhist kingdom centered on Chiang Mai. During the period of its political independence (1292–1558), Lan Na maintained close religious and cultural connections with the Theravada Buddhist world of Sri Lanka and mainland Southeast Asia. The region developed a distinctive sculptural tradition closely related to the Chiang Saen ‘Lion-Lord’ style, which was established during the golden age under King Tilok (r. 1441-87) and flourished under King Mueung Kaeo (r. 1495-1525). The Buddha images are characterized by full oval faces, half-lowered eyes, pronounced curls crowned by a lotus bud finial, and serene, balanced proportions reflecting the spiritual ideals of northern Thai Buddhism.
