A RED AND GREEN OVERLAY ‘LOTUS’ MILKY-GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 1760-1830 Published: Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottle, The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol. 5, Part 3, p. 662, no. 995. China. The pear form bottle surmounted by a tubular neck with subtle concave lip, overlaid in ruby-red and emerald-green on a milky-glass ground, finely carved to depict two lotus blossoms issuing from a leaf that forms the foot with further stems and leaves rising on the side. Provenance: Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 5 May 1994, lot 1273. The Collection of Mary and George Bloch, acquired from the above. Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 24 November 2014, lot 170, sold for HKD 52,500 or approx. EUR 7,600 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Estate of Dr. Thomas A. Klein, MD., acquired from the above and sold to benefit Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. George and Mary Bloch were prominent collectors and scholars in the field of Chinese snuff bottles, renowned for the depth and quality of their collection as well as their contributions to the study and appreciation of these objects. George Bloch was born in Vienna in 1920 into a family of respected Austrian industrialists. He was schooled in England, fled Austria in the late 1930s due to the Anschluss, and resettled in Shanghai. He built up a hugely successful business in Hong Kong, manufacturing housewares and computer parts and importing and distributing timepieces. In 1969 he married Mary, who was born in Tianjin, the daughter of White Russian émigrés. It was a meeting of minds: George had already formed a major collection of stamps and Mary, who was fluent in Mandarin Chinese, had been surrounded by Chinese culture all her life. Over 4 decades they assembled a distinguished group of snuff bottles but also collected other East and Southeast Asian art, as well as Old Master prints. Their snuff bottle collection was published in Moss et. al., A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottle, The Mary and George Bloch Collection. Pieces from their collection have been widely exhibited and cited in major museum collections and auction catalogues. Thomas A. Klein (1939-2025) combined a distinguished medical career with a lifelong passion for collecting Chinese snuff bottles, approaching both with quiet dedication and discernment. Over more than forty years, he carefully handled and studied his collection, contributing items to exhibitions such as Embers of the East, held by the I.C.S.B.S. A graduate of Harvard University and the University of Rochester, he served in senior roles in the U.S. Army and spent thirty years at Jefferson Hospital, retiring in 2023 as Vice Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology after training hundreds of residents and medical students. His legacy endures through the Thomas A. Klein, MD Professorship in Quality and Safety in Women’s Health and the ongoing appreciation of his snuff bottle collection. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and areas of crizzling. Stopper: Tourmaline cabochon on a black platelet Weight: 32.5 g Dimensions: Height including stopper 52 mm. Diameter neck 13 mm and mouth 7 mm. Despite the light crizzling of the near-colorless ground, this bottle is unusual and exceptionally well executed. Small in size, it displays the characteristic colors of the group, though similar palettes appear in works from other workshops. The quality of execution exceeds that typically associated with the group, suggesting the possibility of an early work. The subtle crizzling supports this hypothesis, though it should be noted that such surface effects continued sporadically into the mid-Qing period. The subject matter of this bottle embodies the qualities of a perfect gentleman (junzi), reflecting the intrinsic attributes of the lotus, including purity, beauty, and fragrance. The lotus (he) leaf wrapping the bottle (ping) signifies peace within the family (heping), though alternative interpretations suggest it may also convey the wish for a safe and prosperous year. The combination of form and motif reflects both literati aesthetic ideals and auspicious symbolism in late 18th-century Chinese scholarly culture.
