拍品描述 翻译
A YORUBA EGUNGUN CEREMOMIAL MASK AND COSTUME, MID-20TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Nigeria. Comprising a wooden mask and accompanying ceremonial costume. The helmet mask boldly carved as a head, rising from a tall cylindrical neck to an expressive face with protruding circular eyes, a broad nose, and a prominent ribbed mouth with full lips, surmounted by projecting ears and cowrie shell hair. The costume consisting of blue striped and red patterned textile adorned with additional cowrie shells. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Good condition with typical wear and manufacturing irregularities. The head with tiny nicks, small chips, age cracks, warping. The textile with loose threads, tears, holes and soiling. Dimensions: Height 51.5 cm (head), 234 cm (costume) In Yoruba communities , ancestors are described as “beings from beyond,” fittingly personified by otherworldly Egungun masks such as this one. These masks are worn at annual street festivals held in honor of the ancestor of a city’s founding lineages. Each of the mask’s material components has meaning. The outer layers are made from imported velvets to convey social prestige through the display of luxurious cloth. The inner layers are made of indigo-dyed, handspun cotton cloth. Cowrie shells, used in Ifa divination and in the past as a form of currency, cascade profusely. Literature comparison: Compare a related Egungun mask and costume, dated to the late 1950s, 188 cm high, in the Spencer Museum of Art, accession number 2007.3167. Compare a related Egungun costume, dated 18 th -20 th century, in the High Museum of Art, accession 2002.2.
