拍品描述 翻译
A GROUP OF FOUR POLYCHROME WOOD ‘WAYANG TOPENG’ DANCE MASKS, CENTRAL JAVA This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Indonesia, early – mid-20 th century. Comprising four wood masks of gently tapering form, finely carved and richly decorated in vivid polychrome, representing refined, noble, and comic characters from the Javanese wayang topeng tradition associated with the Panji cycle. Three display idealized courtly features, with elongated half-closed eyes, slender pointed noses, delicately smiling mouths revealing gilt teeth, and elaborate crowns painted with dense floral and geometric ornament. The fourth represents the demonic character Rangda, with large bulging eyes framed by applied hair, a prominent nose, moustache, and broad toothy grin, the forehead further embellished with inset glass ornaments. Some with inscriptions to the reverse, all retaining pierced apertures, some with cords or fabric fasteners used to secure the masks during performance. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Good condition, with expected traces of handling and usage, slight rubbing and flaking to the pigments, minor losses to inlaid decoration, minute chips, and surface scratches. Weight: 90.1 – 202.4 g Dimensions: Height 17.8 – 19.9 cm Topeng is a classical Indonesian masked dance-drama tradition in which one or more elaborately costumed performers enact narratives drawn from courtly legends, heroic tales, and mythology. The performances are accompanied by a gamelan orchestra or other traditional musical ensembles, with the masks serving as essential markers of character and identity. In East and Central Java , this tradition is known as Wayang Gedog and represents one of the most distinctive performing arts of the region. Its repertory is primarily based on the Panji cycle, a corpus of stories associated with the ancient Kingdom of Janggala. Performers wear finely crafted masks, known as wayang topeng or wayang gedog, which embody the principal characters of these narratives. The Panji cycle centers on the enduring romance between Princess Candra Kirana of Kediri and Raden Panji Asmarabangun, the legendary crown prince of Janggala. Within the Javanese-Hindu tradition, Candra Kirana is regarded as an earthly manifestation of Dewi Ratih, the goddess of love, while Panji is identified with Kamajaya, the god of love. Their story has remained one of the foundational themes of Javanese literature and performance for centuries. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related polychrome wood ‘wayang topeng’ dance mask depicting the goddess Dewi Bikang Mardeya, Indonesia, Central Java, 1800-1816, 18 cm high, in the British Museum, registration number As1859,1228.365. Compare a closely related polychrome wood ‘wayang topeng’ dance mask, Indonesia, Central Java, 20th century, 20 cm high, in the National Gallery of Victoria, accession number AS14-1973.
