A DARK GREEN SERPENTINE FIGURE OF A HUNCHBACKED MAN, OLMEC CULTURE, MIDDLE PRECLASSIC PERIOD, 900-400 BC This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Of compact stature, hunchbacked, with toes indicated and arms joining below the navel, the face with a fierce expression showing downward-curved, parted lips reminiscent of a 'were-jaguar', drilled to the corners of the mouth, rounded chin, and narrowed eyes under gently curved brows. The opaque stone is of a lustrous dark green tone with paler veins. Provenance: Collection of Kathrin and Andreas Lindner, Munich, Germany. Professor Gert Chesi, acquired from the above circa 1995-2010 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. A provenance letter from the Kathrin and Andreas Lindner Collection, confirming the provenance and attribution above, accompanies this lot. Dr. Andreas Lindner is a distinguished private collector of African, Oceanic, and Native American art. From the 1990s onwards, he and his wife Kathrin assembled an important collection, part of which was presented in a single-owner sale at Sotheby’s Paris on 8 June 2007, achieving a total of over EUR 6,000,000. Works from their collection have also been exhibited at the Museum der V?lker in Schwaz, Tyrol. Dr. Lindner further established the Stiftung für Au?ereurop?ische Kunst, a foundation dedicated to fostering respect and understanding for cultures beyond Europe. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of weathering, encrustations, the stone with natural fissures, few of which have developed into small hairline cracks. Weight: 115 g and 161 g Dimensions: Height 8.3 cm With an associated modern stand. (2) The Olmec were Mesoamerica's greatest lapidaries ; their work in jade and serpentine was prized by both contemporary and later Mesoamerican cultures. Human beings with jaguar traits, such as the downturned mouth of this figurine, are common in Olmec art. Such creatures were probably believed to possess supernatural powers. The many representations of hunchbacks have led to the suggestion hunchbacks people held positions of importance in the ancient Mesoamerican world. Beginning with Olmec peoples, these individuals were thought to possess special abilities due to their physical anomalies. Long before the rise of the Maya and Aztec , the Olmec established one of the foundational artistic traditions of ancient Mesoamerica. Celebrated as Mesoamerica’s earliest major civilization and often regarded as its “mother culture,” the Olmec produced monumental stone sculptures, animated clay figures, and finely worked objects in hard stone. Their lapidaries mastered the carving of jade, serpentine, and other precious materials to create figures, masks, celts, and personal ornaments for the ruling elite. While deeply rooted in the human form, Olmec art also gave powerful expression to composite supernatural beings, whose forms range from strikingly naturalistic to highly abstract. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related Olmec serpentine standing figure, dated c. 900-400 BC, 10.6 cm tall, in the Cleveland Museum of Art, accession number 1990.219. Compare a related Olmec jadeite figure of a man, dated ca. 800-500 BC, 8.9 cm tall, in the Brooklyn Museum, accession number 51.197.2.
