A FINE LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF MAMI WATA, BY AGBAGLI KOSSI (1935-1991) This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Published: Gert Chesi & Daphne Schlorhaufer, Afrika Asien. Kunst der V?lker. Die Sammlungen im Haus der V?lker, Schwaz, 1996, p. 81 and p. 85. Exhibited: Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, before 2018. Togo, 20 th century. Finely carved as a fair-skinned female figure joined at the waist with a white dog, the hair lacquered in deep black framing the oval face, rendered with triangular eyes below arched brows, and her arms raised and stretched to the front. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Overall good condition with minor wear, cracks to chest, the arms and the dog’s tail with old repairs, little flaking to lacquer, minor touchups. Weight: 6.3 kg Dimensions: Height 67.5 cm (excl. stand), 69.5 cm (incl. stand) Agbagli Kossi (1935-1991) was a Togolese sculptor associated with the Voodoo artistic tradition of southern Togo, particularly the Lomé region. Working primarily in wood, he produced ritual and altar figures for Voodoo priests. His workshop in Lomé became a focal point for the production of devotional sculpture, and his works circulated both within religious contexts and in international collections. Kossi gained wider recognition in the late 20th century, when his sculptures were included in the exhibition Les Magiciens de la Terre (1989 and 1991) in Paris and in Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. In 2008, his work appeared at the Mami Wata: Arts for Water Spirits in Africa and Its Diasporas showcasing at the Fowler Museum of UCLA in Los Angeles. The present figure likely represents a representation of Mami, often seen in mermaid form and called Mami Wata. She is known in multiple regional variations, including composite representations with multiple heads or depicted conjoined at the waist with a serpent. Mami Wata is a widely venerated water spirit in West and Central African religious traditions who functions as a mediator between the human and spiritual worlds, often appearing in dreams or trance states to initiate devotees. Her origins are syncretic, combining indigenous African water divinities with imagery influenced by European mermaid iconography introduced during the colonial period. She is typically understood as a powerful, ambivalent spirit associated with water, wealth, healing, beauty, and danger. Literature comparison: Compare a related lacquered wood figure by Agbagli Kossi, illustrated in Gert Chesi, Voodoo, Perlinger Verlag, München, 1979, p. 140. Compare a group of figures by Agbagli Kossi, illustrated in “Wertanlage: Voodoo und die Kunst der Zauberer”, in Geld. Das Deutsche Bank Magazin, 1986, no. 2, p. 22-23.
