拍品描述 翻译
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Expert’s note: The presence of the Aro knot twisted into the form of this object suggest it can be described as a Lower Niger Bronze. This intricate motif symbolizes prestige, seniority, and moral authority within the community. The name derives from an association once proposed with the Aro people of southeastern Nigeria, among whom a comparable knotted object was reportedly held in high esteem. The term ‘Lower Niger Bronze Industry’ was created and first used by William Buller Fagg to identify a miscellaneous group of lost-wax cast objects which were stylistically and/or iconographically distinct from Igbo-Ukwu, Ife and Benin City pieces. The objects are associated with various locations in southern Nigeria, south of the confluence of Benue and Niger Rivers and between the borders with the Republic of Benin and Cameroon. They are thought to have been made prior to European contact, circa pre-1500 AD, and are sometimes referred to as the ‘Lower Niger Bronze Industries’ or ‘Lower Niger Bronzes’. In this group, the Aro knot motif is pervasive, appearing on a variety of objects ranging from bells to staff finials and bracelets like the present lot. Southern Nigeria, 16th-19th century or earlier. Skillfully cast in the form of a twisted rope with overlapping sides terminating on both ends in a loop and forming a knot at the mid-section. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and casting irregularities. Weight: 950 g Dimensions: Width 11.8 cm Manillas are a form of commodity money historically used in West Africa, typically cast in brass, bronze, or copper. Produced in large quantities, they exist in a wide variety of designs, sizes, and weights, reflecting both regional and chronological diversity. Likely originating prior to the colonial period, possibly through trade with the Portuguese Empire, manillas continued to function as currency and as decorative objects until the late 1940s. Even today, they are sometimes worn as ornaments on the arms, legs, or around the neck, underscoring their dual role as both medium of exchange and culturally significant adornment. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related Igbo copper alloy bracelet, spuriously dated to the 19 th century, 10.1 cm wide, in the British Museum, registration number Af1954,23.613. Compare a closely related Igbo copper alloy bracelet, spuriously dated 1500-1900, 14.1 cm wide, in the British Museum, registration number Af1931,0506.25.
