Collection of Helmut and Marianne Zimmer, Zurich, Switzerland, acquired from the above. Hammer Auktionen, Basel, Switzerland. A copy of the signed certificate from Hammer Auktionen, confirming the provenance above, accompanies the lot. Maria Wyss was a Swiss-based collector specializing in African art, with a particular focus on wooden sculptures and masks. Pieces from her collection were acquired by the Museum Rietberg, Switzerland. Helmut (1931-2021) and Marianne Zimmer were avid collectors of African masks and sculptures. Many of their pieces found their way into museums including the Museum Rietberg as well as auction houses like Sotheby’s. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Overall good condition with old wear, signs of weathering, traces of insect activity, minor losses, old chips, age cracks, flaking. Good patina. Weight: 1,176 g Dimensions: Length 47.7 cm The Bamana people, also referred to as Bambara, constitute a Mandé ethnic group indigenous to West Africa, with a principal presence in southern Mali and in regions of C?te d’Ivoire, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Senegal. Historical scholarship associates the Bamana with the Bambara Empire, one of the major political entities of eighteenth-century West Africa. According to the Encyclopedia of Africa, the term ‘Bambara’ has been interpreted as ‘unbeliever’ or ‘infidel’ in reference to resistance to Islamization following the campaigns of the Toucouleur leader El Hadj Omar Tall during the mid-nineteenth century. Secret societies are widespread among them, and the initiation of these societies features a great variety of masks. In Bamana country , the suruku mask is used every seven years during the ceremonies of the korè initiation society. Young men receive instruction enabling them to reach adulthood. The development of their masculine identity involves the initiation of sexuality, funeral rites and cults. It is also accompanied by the testing of the physical and moral strength of adolescents.
