拍品描述 翻译
A MAKONDE POTTERY WATER POT, CHILONGO CHAKUMUTO, SIGNED ROSA, DATED 1993 This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Mozambique. Well potted, of spherical form with a broad shoulder, waisted neck and a flaring rim. The dark-brown smooth surface with neatly incised pattern of curved bands, zigzags, triangles, and semicircles, all with white incrustations. Inscriptions: Signed ‘Rosa’ and dated ‘8.8.1993’. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities. Few tiny nicks to the rim. Weight: 4.6 kg Dimensions: Height 31.8 cm The Makonde of northern Mozambique are known for their large, intricately ornamented pottery jars, and while these are increasingly being supplanted today by other, less-fragile containers, some people still prefer them for transporting and storing water. Hence, these vessels continue to be made for domestic use, and their beauty has also led to their production for the commercial art market. Made on commission, such vessels were among the most treasured possession of Makonde women. The water jar is the Makonde potter’s favored stage for virtuoso expressions of creativity , such that no two pots ever receive the same overall design. After a piece has been built up of coils and then smoothed, shaped, and left to dry for several hours, it is painted with a mica-rich wash of earth, charcoal, and water, which gives it a distinctive, speckled gray-black color. Once this colored wash has been absorbed, the potter burnishes the surface with a stone until it is hard and smooth. At this point the water pot is ready to be meticulously embellished with incised designs. The Makonde word for drawing on pottery, nkova , is the same word they use for tattooing, once a widespread practice with important ritual significance, and many visual similarities exist between these two art forms. The potter marks the outlines of the pattern – a combination of straight and curved bands, zigzags, triangles, and semicircles – and then fills it in with light hatch marks, punctured lines, or more deeply impressed triangles. Literature comparison: Compare two closely related larger Makonde pots, 53.3 cm and 47 cm wide, in the Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami, object numbers 2007.21.1 and -.2. Compare a closely related larger Makonde pot, dated 1950-1999, 60.4 cm wide, in the Art Institute of Chicago, reference number 2001.150. Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams New York, 12 May 2012, lot 347 Price: USD 4,375 or approx.
