拍品描述 翻译
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Japan. Of yosegi-zukuri construction, finely standing upon a lotus pedestal raised on a tiered hexagonal stand, further adorned with lotus foliage. The right hand is lowered in segan-in (varada mudra), while the left is slightly raised before the chest. The figure is clad in loosely draped monastic robes that fall in voluminous folds from the shoulders and open at the chest, adorned with a reticulated necklace (munakazari). The well-defined face with full, fleshy contours, conveys a serene, meditative expression, with heavy-lidded, downcast eyes beneath gently arched eyebrows, centered by an inlaid urna above a slender nose and full lips, all flanked by elongated, pendulous earlobes. The hair is neatly arranged in orderly tufts, secured with a simple diadem and a pair of metal ribbons hanging at either side. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Overall good condition with expected wear, obvious losses, minor chips to exposed areas, the metal mounts slightly loose and warped, rubbing and flaking to gilding and pigments with associated minor touchups. Weight: 3.3 kg (total) Dimensions: Height 82.1 cm (total) This statue of the merciful bosatsu Kannon , among the most revered of Buddhist deities in Japan, may have once flanked an image of Amida Nyorai, the Buddha of the Future, with Seishi, another bodhisattva, on the other side. It is also possible that she comes from a larger grouping of 25 bodhisattvas that are sometimes arranged around Amida Nyorai as he welcomes dying believers to his Western Paradise. As the embodiment of compassion , Kannon is among the most widely venerated divinities in Asia and Japan, both in ancient and modern times. In sacred texts, Kannon appears as a bodhisattva who attains enlightenment but postpones Buddhahood until all beings can be saved, and is frequently mentioned in numerous Mahayana sutras, most notably in the Lotus Sutra. Worship of Kannon began in India around the first and second century AD and later spread throughout Southeast Asia, China, and Korea. Veneration in Japan began in the late sixth century, soon after Buddhism reached the Japanese archipelago through Korea and China. Initially represented as male, Kannon was later portrayed in female form in China, Japan, and other East Asian countries, each culture adapting the image of Kannon according to local temperament and spiritual concepts.
