拍品描述 翻译
A VERY LARGE (163 CM) GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF BUDDHA CALLING FOR THE RAIN, LUANG PHRABANG PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Expert’s note: The present statue is remarkable for its monumental scale, refined carving, and exceptional state of preservation. Depicted standing with both arms pendent at the sides, the figure adopts a posture unique to the Buddhist sculptural traditions of Southeast Asia. This distinctive gesture has been variously interpreted as representing the Buddha during his descent from Tavatimsa Heaven, after preaching to his mother, or following his Enlightenment. In Thailand, it is more commonly associated with the pang ham yat (‘calling for rain’) gesture. The distinctive treatment of the belt likewise finds close stylistic parallels in a Buddha image from Vientiane, illustrated in S. Lopetcharat, Lao Buddha: The Image and Its History, Bangkok, 2000, p. 244. See also a Burmese gilt-lacquered wood figure of Buddha standing with arms pendent, dated late 18 th century, 175 cm high, illustrated by Zentner, SKU 1500750. Laos. Standing in samabhanga atop a separately cast, square and multi-tiered pedestal, wearing a diaphanous monastic robe secured at the waist by a belt and holding his hands straight along his body. The face with a serene expression, heavy-lidded, downcast eyes, small lips that form a calm smile, as well as elegantly arched brows, flanked by elongated ears. Their hair is arranged in pointed curls around a high ushnisha, which is surmounted by a separately cast ketumala Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Very good condition with typical wear and manufacturing irregularities. Tiny nicks, small dents, age cracks, losses to gilt, remnants of pigments, minor losses mostly to hair. Dimensions: Height 163 cm (excl. stand), 198 cm (incl. stand) Mounted on an associated stand. (2) The history and religion of Laos and northern Thailand share a various degree of assimilation and development. The founder of the Thai Lan Na Kingdom, King Mangrai, took Vientiane under his rule in the 13th century. Half a century later, the Thai exile Fa Ngum broke away and established the Lao kingdom Lan Xang Hom Khao. He is credited with bringing the Sinhalese Buddhism adopted in Northern Thailand to Laos. Similarly, Lao Buddhist sculpture borrowed heavily from northern Thai styles produced at centers of production like Chiang Mai. Within this context, it is not surprising that the present lot shows stylistic features common to both cultures.
