拍品描述 翻译
A LARGE BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, MANDALAY PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Laboratory Kotalla on 12 April 2001, based on sample number 010395, sets the firing date of both samples taken to be 120 years +/-30 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot. Published: Gert Chesi & Daphne Schlorhaufer, Afrika Asien. Kunst der V?lker. Die Sammlungen im Haus der V?lker, Schwaz, 1996, p. 155. Expert’s note: The present bronze belongs to the mature sculptural tradition of the Konbaung period (1752-1885) and may be dated to the 18th century. The image displays several characteristics associated with Burmese court-sponsored Buddhist sculpture of the period, including the elegant elongated proportions, gently oval face with lowered gaze, long pendulous earlobes, and the fluid treatment of the monastic robe falling in rhythmic folds across the body. While these features would later become more fully developed in the celebrated Mandalay style of the 19th century, the present work retains the restrained modeling and balanced composition characteristic of earlier Konbaung-period bronzes. Burma, 19th century. Heavily cast, seated in dhyanasana atop a tiered base with large loop handles for adjustment. The right hand is lowered in bhumisparsha mudra and the left above his lap, wearing long flowing robes cascading in voluminous folds. His serene face with downcast eyes and full lips forming a calm smile, flanked by long pendulous earlobes, the hair in tight curls secured by a band above his forehead. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Fair condition with expected wear, casting irregularities, small light dents, few minor losses, old repairs to the nose and one ear, scattered minor fills, remnants of gilt. The bronze has a fine, naturally grown, dark patina with cuprite and malachite encrustation. Weight: 80 kg Dimensions: Height 75.5 cm This finely cast image represents the high point of the Mandalay period (1857-1885) for traditional Burmese sculpture in technique and theme. The term refers to the final phase of Burmese royal art, named after the establishment of the last royal capital at Mandalay by King Mindon in 1857, which became the principal artistic and religious center of the kingdom. The historical Buddha Shakyamuni is shown performing the bhumisparsa mudra, the gesture by which he calls the earth to witness his enlightenment in the face of the temptations of the demon king Mara. The rendering of the Buddha robes conveys a subtle tremor, as if stirred by vibrations of awakening. At the same time, it may also evoke presence of the earth goddess, suggested by fluid swirls and cascading folds of the garment, which resemble waterfalls merging into a flowing river-like hem. In the Tai cultural sphere , the earth deity is known as Nang Thoranee or Mae Thoranee, ‘Lady Earth’ or ‘Mother Earth’. Unique to Southeast Asia, she is closely associated with water and waterfalls, reflecting the syncretic fusion of indigenous traditions with Hindu-Buddhist beliefs. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related Burmese bronze Buddha, dated to the 18 th century, 71.1 cm high, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 96.54.1. Compare a closely related bronze figure of Buddha Shakyamuni, in the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore, accession number 2014-00461. Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Van Ham Cologne, 3 December 2015, lot 366 Price: EUR 38,700 or approx. EUR 51,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Description: Bedeutender Buddha. Bronze. Datiert 1876. Expert remark: Compare the closely related modeling and manner of casting with similar pose, robe, facial features, and patina. Note the larger size (112 cm) and dating inscription.
