拍品描述 翻译
A FINE GILT-LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, MANDALAY PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Burma, 19th century. Finely cast, depicted seated in dhyanasana atop a tiered plinth, the right hand lowered in bhumisparsha mudra and the left resting upon his lap. The figure clad in long, flowing robes cascading in voluminous folds over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder exposed, and gathering around his legs. His well-defined face conveys a serene, meditative expression, marked by glass-inlaid, heavy-lidded eyes, an aquiline nose, and full lips forming a gentle, composed smile, framed by elongated, pendulous earlobes. The hair is neatly arranged in tight curls covering the domed ushnisha, secured by a crystal-inlaid band above the forehead. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Good condition with expected wear, casting irregularities, traces of weathering and corrosion, a fracture at the rear of the base and possible evidence of restoration to the mouth, minor losses to inlaid decoration, remnants of original gilding and pigments with associated flaking, occasional dents, and surface scratches. Weight: 15.8 kg Dimensions: Height 50.8 cm This finely cast image represents the high point of the Mandalay period (1857-1885) for traditional Burmese sculpture in technique and theme. The term refers to the final phase of Burmese royal art, named after the establishment of the last royal capital at Mandalay by King Mindon in 1857, which became the principal artistic and religious center of the kingdom. The historical Buddha Shakyamuni is shown performing the bhumisparsa mudra, the gesture by which he calls the earth to witness his enlightenment in the face of the temptations of the demon king Mara. The rendering of the Buddha robes conveys a subtle tremor, as if stirred by vibrations of awakening. At the same time, it may also evoke presence of the earth goddess, suggested by fluid swirls and cascading folds of the garment, which resemble waterfalls merging into a flowing river-like hem. In the Tai cultural sphere , the earth deity is known as Nang Thoranee or Mae Thoranee, ‘Lady Earth’ or ‘Mother Earth’. Unique to Southeast Asia, she is closely associated with water and waterfalls, reflecting the syncretic fusion of indigenous traditions with Hindu-Buddhist beliefs. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related bronze figure of Buddha, Burma, Mandalay period, c. 1860, 41.5 cm high, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number MISC.1-1920. Compare a closely related bronze figure of Buddha, Burma, Mandalay period, c. 1840, 68 cm high, illustrated by Michael Backman Ltd., London, inventory number 8902.
