拍品描述 翻译
A LARGE (103 CM) GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, LUANG PHRABANG PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Laos. Powerfully carved, seated in virasana atop a lotus pedestal, his right hand lowered to touch the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while the left rests upon the lap in dhyana mudra, clad in a diaphanous sanghati draped over the left shoulder to cover his elongated torso. The oval face bearing a serene and contemplative expression distinguished by crystal-inlaid heavy-lidded eyes gazing forward, a prominent nose, and full lips forming a gentle smile, framed by large convex ears. The hair is arranged in tight spikes below the flame finial. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Good condition with minor wear, expected age cracks, signs of weathering and erosion, minor obvious losses, occasional small chips, light warping, flaking and minor losses to lacquer gilding, some of which has been renewed over the centuries. Weight: 41.6 kg (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 103.2 cm (excl. stand), 107.1 cm (incl. stand) With an associated modern stand. (2) Luang Phrabang was among the most important royal and religious centers of Lao artistic production. Its court and leading monasteries supported accomplished carvers, lacquerers and gilders, who produced imposing images for royal, monastic and communal patronage. Carved in wood and retaining extensive gilding over a dark lacquer ground, the present Buddha may be placed within this northern Lao tradition. The assured conception suggests an experienced workshop operating within the orbit of elite and monastic patronage. Its elongated torso, broad angular shoulders and austere frontality are combined with a tapering face, half-closed eyes and sharply projecting ears. Together with the linear treatment of the robe, these features reveal marked affinities with the Buddhist art of the Shan States, particularly that of the eastern Shan region. Such affinities reflect the close connections that linked northern Laos, Lan Na and the eastern Shan States during the eighteenth century, when trade and monastic networks carried religious texts, images and artistic ideas across the upper Mekong and adjoining highlands. Literature comparison: Compare a related lacquered wood figure of Buddha from Shan State, 88 cm high, dated 18 th century, exhibited in The Art of Compassion. Tibetan, Mongolian, and Burmese Buddhist Art from the Todd Barlin Collection, The Oceanic Arts Australia, Sydney, 2018. Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Bonhams London, 8 June 2004, lot 454 Mid-Estimate: GBP 3,500 or approx.
