拍品描述 翻译
A LARGE (125 CM) TEAK WOOD ‘PEACOCK CHEST’ ROOF ORNAMENT, DU-YIN, MANDALAY PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Expert’s note: The du-yin is a characteristic finial of Burmese royal and religious architecture, positioned at the corners or terminal points of the tiered pyatthat roof. Its boldly rising, recurved profile has traditionally been likened both to the breast of a peacock and to the prow of a ceremonial vessel. Such finials were frequently enriched with smaller pot-shaped pinnacles (as seen in the present lot) known as sein-oh, or ‘diamond pots’, producing the elaborate ascending silhouettes associated with the great teak monasteries and palace buildings of the Mandalay period. The present example displays formal and decorative features closely comparable to the carved teak roof ornaments of Shwenandaw Kyaung in Mandalay. The monastery was created from the former royal apartments of King Mindon within the Mandalay Palace, which were dismantled and re-erected by his son, King Thibaw, in 1878 as a memorial monastery. Celebrated for its intricate carvings of Buddhist narratives and its richly ornamented roofline, Shwenandaw remains the principal surviving original teak structure of the former Royal Palace complex. Burma, late 19th century. Boldly carved, the ornament displays the characteristic swelling, recurved profile traditionally likened to the breast of a peacock or the prow of a vessel. The lower section is worked in high relief and openwork with a crowned nat seated in rajalilasana, the right knee raised and the corresponding arm resting upon it, richly attired in layered garments and ornaments and wearing a tall tiered headdress. Above, the body rises to a tapering central finial flanked by two smaller sein-oh pinnacles, each surmounted by a diminutive nat figure. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Good condition, with expected wear, natural imperfections, such as visible splits and age cracks, traces of weathering and erosion, obvious losses, and scattered chips. The wood exhibiting an attractive grain and a fine, naturally grown patina. Weight: 20.3 kg (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 124.5 cm (excl. stand), 147.3 cm (incl. stand) With an associated stand. (2) Nats are powerful tutelary spirits venerated in Burma (present-day Myanmar) and neighboring regions alongside Buddhism. They are traditionally divided into two broad categories: the Thirty-Seven Great Nats, whose status was formalized by King Anawrahta as part of an official pantheon, and a wider array of local guardian spirits associated with forests, mountains, rivers, and villages. Many of the Thirty-Seven Great Nats are believed to have been historical individuals who suffered violent or untimely deaths and were subsequently deified. The veneration of nats predates the introduction of Buddhism to Burma . Following the establishment of Buddhism, nat worship was incorporated into Buddhist practice through a process of religious syncretism. As part of his efforts to promote Theravada Buddhism, King Anawrahta integrated established nat cults into the new religious framework, facilitating the acceptance of Buddhism while preserving deeply rooted local beliefs and ritual traditions.
