拍品描述 翻译
A MONUMENTAL (209 CM) TEAK WOOD ANCESTOR POLE, THAT MAI, 19TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Thailand, Isan Province. Skillfully carved, of imposing vertical profile and rectangular section, composed of three clearly articulated parts: a prismatic base shaft designed for anchoring the stela into the ground; a central body of similar form, hollowed internally, with a rectangular opening on one face for the insertion of relics; and a tapering upper section culminating in a pointed finial. The transitions between these sections articulated through stepped, chamfered tiers. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Good condition with old wear, obvious losses, age cracks and splits, signs of weathering and erosion. The wood exhibiting an attractive grain and a rich, naturally grown, dark patina. Presenting magnificently. Weight: 55.4 kg (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 209.3 cm (excl. stand), 218.5 cm (incl. stand) With an associated modern stand. (2) A that mai is a wooden reliquary used to house the relics of ancestors, serving as a focus for remembrance and veneration in a manner comparable to the Lanna That Chedi and the central Thai Chedi. It is traditionally placed along temple boundaries or on elevated ground within family property. The remains of the deceased were initially placed in an earthenware urn, later replaced by a glass container, and then inserted into the rectangular cavity of the That Mai, which was subsequently sealed for protection. Believed to contain the spirit of the deceased, these structures are regarded with deep reverence and are therefore rarely disturbed or destroyed. Reliquaries of this type can still be seen in various ancient temples across Thailand. Literature comparison: For similar examples photographed in situ, see one at Wat Tra Khlong Pho, Nong Rua District, illustrated in Naengnhoi Panchapan, The Soul of Isan Wood Carving, 1993, p. 89, and further wooden that at Wat Tha Bung, Muang District, illustrated ibid.
