拍品描述 翻译
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve China, circa 8 th -11 th century. Magnificently carved, depicted seated in dhyanasana upon an oval pedestal richly decorated in high relief with multiple figural scenes, which rests on a substantial tiered base supported by two crouching lions with fierce faces. The figure is clad in voluminous robes that cascade over the legs in deeply carved folds, each enlivened with narrative scenes illustrating various aspects of the Buddhist universe. The sensitively modeled face conveys a serene expression characterized by heavy-lidded, downcast eyes, a slender nose, and full lips forming a restrained, contemplative smile, all flanked by long, pendulous earlobes. The hair is neatly arranged in broad waves that rise to cover the domed ushnisha, backed by a circular halo with diminutive images of seated Buddhas radiating around the head. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Good condition with expected wear, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, obvious losses, scattered chips, minor old fills, remnants of pigments. Weight: 172.4 kg Dimensions: Height 81.5 cm (excl. stand), 82.3 cm (incl. stand) With an associated metal stand. (2) The Cosmic Buddha presents a unified representation of the Buddhist universe within a single image, conceived as the totality of a single divine Buddha-body. Here, the Buddha is shown enthroned on a two-tiered pedestal that symbolizes Mount Meru, the axis and summit of the world. The opening of his robes reveals a three-tiered vision of the Buddhist realm. In the lowest register appears a hell scene, where a demon stirs a cauldron of sinners. Above this lies the human realm, in which the historical Buddha Sakyamuni departs from the palace of his father after encountering old age and death. In the upper register, the Buddha is shown reclining at the moment of his passing, attended by monks in mourning. From his chest emerges a triangular representation of Mount Meru. Its summit forms a heavenly domain inhabited by the mansions of the gods and also functions as the mountain on which the Cosmic Buddha is seated. Expert’s note: Stylistically this impressive figure compares well with the monumental sculpture of the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, Henan, carved directly into limestone cliffs mainly during the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties. The carving of the facial features, especially the small pursed mouth, obliquely cut eyes and curved brows, the shape of the face with its full cheeks and small rounded double chin, and the hair carved in distinctive whorls are all seen in the famous colossal Vairocana statue, widely considered the quintessence of Buddhist sculpture in China. Literature comparison: Compare the closely related marble figure of the Cosmic Buddha, 104.1 cm high, dated Tang dynasty “or later”, on view at the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, object number B61S66. Compare a related stone sculpture of Buddha Shakyamuni, found in 1991 at the Liao-era Lindong South Pagoda, constructed around 1043. Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie’s New York, 17 March 2017, lot 1018 Price: USD 150,000 or approx. EUR 180,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Description: A dated stone figure of Amitabha Buddha, Tang dynasty, dated by inscription to AD 720 Expert remark: Compare the related modeling, manner of carving, and subject, with similar expression. Note the smaller size (49 cm) and dating inscription.
