Although the Yongzheng Emperor of the Qing Dynasty ruled for less than 13 years, his reputation for tireless governance is widely admired, and his refined taste in ceramics surpassed many of his successors. Official kiln porcelain from the Yongzheng period is known for its highly distinctive elements, including lustrous, gentle glaze colors, elegantly proportioned forms, and neatly executed, powerful marks. Ji hong, also called sacrificial red, is a type of glaze produced during the Ming and Qing dynasties. A legend that spreads around the Jingdezhen area explains its origin. During the Xuande reign of the Ming Dynasty, the emperor ordered the imperial kilns to produce a red?glazed ware. However, copper?red glazes were notoriously unstable and extremely difficult to fire. This was a problem for quite some time, especially because an imperial command could not be disobeyed. As the deadline approached and the anxiety of the workers mounted, the daughter of one of the kiln workers threw herself into the kiln. In an instant, her blood dyed the ware, and the whole kiln turned red. Ever since, people have called it “sacrificial red.” The legend can’t be verified, but the extreme difficulty of firing sacrificial red is a fact. The sacrificial red porcelains made during the Ming and Qing dynasties possess a red that does not glare, a vividness that never goes over the top, a glaze that does not run, and no crackles. They are among the most precious copper?red glazes. This vase has a flared mouth rim, a constricted neck, a globular body, and a shallow foot ring, forming an unusual yet elegant shape. The exterior is entirely covered with sacrificial red glaze, thick and lustrous. The base bears a six?character underglaze?blue mark, “Da Qing Yongzheng Nian Zhi,” written within double circles. This Yongzheng?period sacrificial red vase displays a pure, even glaze color, a well?proportioned and refined form, and meticulously designed lines. Its shape is exceptionally rare; in fact, no identical example is known. This unique shape fully embodies the graceful yet rigorous style of Yongzheng imperial porcelain. The vase is small enough to hold in your hand, and it would make the perfect desk object for any scholarly study room. If you place it on a table or shelf, it adds a quiet, elegant charm that elevates the taste of any room. Its value as a collectible is extremely high.
