This cup has a flared mouth, straight sides, and a recessed foot. Finely potted, the body is thin, light, even, and clean, with a well-proportioned and elegant form. The vessel is covered throughout in a transparent glaze of lustrous white with a subtle bluish tint. The exposed body at the footrim is fine, dense, and pure white, displaying the refined qualities of the porcelain body and glaze associated with early ceramics. The base bears a six-character underglaze-blue mark reading "Da Ming Chenghua Nian Zhi" in regular script. The interior is undecorated, giving it a restrained and elegant appearance, while the exterior is finely painted in doucai with a continuous scene of remarkable vitality and richness.
The composition depicts a proud rooster with its neck raised high, accompanied by a hen strolling calmly nearby, while several chicks forage, glance about, and play together in varied and lively poses. The scene is punctuated by delicately rendered rocks, elegant flowers, bamboo, and garden stones, creating a carefully balanced arrangement in which movement and stillness complement one another. The enamels are pure and brilliant, with the various colors harmoniously combined. The blue enamel is particularly vivid, and the richly modeled textures of the rocks lend the scene a striking sense of depth and realism, achieving an effect of exceptional refinement beyond that of painting on paper or silk.
Beyond its exquisite decoration, this chicken cup also embodies a long-standing literary tradition and a deeper moral significance. The opening poem, "Cockcrow," in the "Airs of Qi" section of the Book of Songs includes the line: "The cock has already crowed; the court is already full." Traditionally, these words encouraged one to rise at the cock's crow, remain diligent and self-disciplined, and avoid idleness and excessive ease. By incorporating the motif of chickens into porcelain decoration, the craftsman evokes the classical associations of "Cockcrow," using an ancient theme to convey a message relevant to the present and employing the object as a vehicle for personal reflection. Though a refined and treasured object, this small vessel also conveys the importance of constant self-vigilance and preparedness in times of peace. It cautions against becoming overly absorbed in the pleasures of material objects or a life of comfort, encouraging instead a spirit of self-reflection and diligence while appreciating the beauty of porcelain. In this way, the cup unites artistic refinement with a philosophy of moral cultivation.
The Palace Museum also preserves chicken cups of the same form and with closely related decorative subjects, demonstrating the established tradition and stylistic lineage to which this piece belongs. It is an object well suited for the appreciation, study, and enjoyment of collectors.
