Xuande Mark and Period (1426-1435) Heavily potted and thick-walled, the exterior decorated with six groups of fruit sprays, comprising pomegranate, longan, grape, persimmon, loquat and peach above a band of lotus petals, six flower sprays decorated below, all encapsulated within a double-lined border, a horizontal six-character Xuande mark inscribed just beneath the rim, with fitted cloth box. Note: The present large bowl exemplifies the artistic and technical achievements of the Xuande reign (1426-1435), widely regarded as the golden age of Ming blue and white porcelain. Potted from fine Jingdezhen kaolin. The decoration is painted in the celebrated Sumaliqing cobalt imported from Persia via the Maritime Silk Road. Its low manganese and high iron content yields rich sapphire tones, soft diffusion, and the distinctive silvery-black crystallization. The fruit-spray motif derives from late Yuan blue and white porcelain. After the establishment of the Jingdezhen imperial kilns, this tradition was refined into standardized court designs. By the Xuande period, the motif had grown more restrained: individually rendered auspicious fruit sprays set against generous reserved space, echoing literati painting aesthetics. A related example is the underglaze-blue pomegranate dish exhibited in Blue and White Porcelain from the Yuan and Early Ming Dynasties, Eskenazi Ltd., London, 2024, no. 7. The present bowl is notable for its exceptionally rare arrangement of six fruit sprays evenly spaced around the exterior: pomegranate (fertility and lineage), peach (longevity), and persimmon (prosperity), together conveying wishes for abundance and enduring fortune. Comparable examples are rare in museum collections: a slightly smaller bowl with the same six-fruit arrangement, formerly in the Qing imperial collection, is in the National Palace Museum, Taipei (故瓷016856N000000000); others are held by the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution (F1952.6a-b), and the British Museum's Sir Percival David Collection (PDF, B.658). A related bowl from the Tianminlou Collection sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, Selected Imperial Ceramics from the Tianminlou Collection, 2 April 2019, lot 5. Diameter 12 x height 4 1/4 in., 30.5 x 10.8 cm. Property from a Private Florida Collection. This lot is located in New York. Overall good visual condition, suffused with glaze craquelures, moderate wears and abrasions as its typical, a few small chips or firing imperfections to the interior, the matted surface possibly due to the acid wash, which leave a trace of chemical smell, no additional damage or restoration found under blacklight.
